Under the leadership of Commander and Political Commissar Zhou Guohua, the Iron Mountain Hero Regiment fought valiantly on the northeastern battlefield without resting, and was ordered to secretly enter the pass, traveling day and night directly to Beiping. Company Commander Qiao Zhenshan led the Red Fourth Company to take a shortcut to assist the North China Field Army in surrounding the Kuomintang's 3rd Army. On the way, they encountered the Kuomintang's 1st Army commanded by Li Changyi. After a fierce battle, the 1st Army retreated into Beiping, during which Qiao Zhenshan unexpectedly met his twin brother Qiao Erbao, who had become Li Changyi's personal guard. Qiao Zhenshan, originally named Qiao Daba, had lost contact with Qiao Erbao many years ago and later joined the revolution, becoming the renowned commander of the Red Fourth Company. Qiao Erbao was saved by Li Changyi during a crisis and stayed by his side as a personal guard. The gratitude and foolish loyalty to his superior conflicted with his deep concern and longing for his brother, leaving Qiao Erbao torn between loyalty and familial ties... Liu Fanyu is the adopted daughter of the Kuomintang's anti-Japanese general Li Changyi, who had just returned from studying in the United States and was serving as a military doctor in her father's troop. During the retreat to the city, she was captured while saving villagers from a fire and encountering Qiao Zhenshan, who was also helping. Through her interactions with Qiao Zhenshan, she was gradually moved by the camaraderie among the soldiers and their love for the people, and became attracted to Qiao Zhenshan's wit and bravery... After returning to Beiping, Liu Fanyu helped Zhou Guohua and Qiao Zhenshan complete their reconnaissance mission in the city and contributed to Li Changyi's eventual uprising. As the Pingjin Campaign was about to commence, the troops of the Fu faction represented by Li Changyi and the Kuomintang Central Army were confined within the city. Qiao Zhenshan and others were tasked with secretly entering the city to obtain the Kuomintang’s city defense layout plan, but returned empty-handed due to the sabotage by the intelligence department’s major general Wang Jingtang. Meanwhile, Zhou Guohua was also ordered to enter the city, using his identity as a former student of the renowned Yanjing University scholar Professor Yu Houwen to persuade Li Changyi, another of his students, to achieve the peaceful liberation of Beiping. He also investigated the distribution of Beiping’s cultural relics to protect this historically significant cultural city from destruction. Inside the city, Zhou Guohua unexpectedly met his university sweetheart Kun Sang Shi Mei, who actively assisted him with his tasks under the guise of a journalist for her newspaper. However, while carrying out his mission, Zhou Guohua discovered that Kun Sang was actually an agent for the Kuomintang's central intelligence agency... Wang Jingtang secretly organized engineering troops to construct a massive underground fortification beneath Beiping, preparing to destroy cultural buildings when Assessed by the Liberating Army, falsely placing the blame on them. In order to uncover this conspiracy, Zhou Guohua decided to re-enter the city, but this time he encountered unprecedented difficulties... During the special battle for the peaceful liberation of Beiping, Qiao Zhenshan displayed his bold and reckless nature, bravery in combat, and cleverness, while also showcasing his evolution and growth through the acceptance of new ideas and cultures. On the second entry into the city to assist Zhou Guohua in investigating the underground fortifications, Qiao Zhenshan unfortunately revealed his identity and was injured while being pursued. A rickshaw puller named Liu Suocheng fortuitously rescued him. While recuperating, Qiao Zhenshan closely interacted with the common people living in Beiping's courtyard houses, personally experiencing their life struggles and aspirations for a better life. Deeply moved, he resolved to do everything within his power to protect this ancient city and its inhabitants from the ravages of war. Driven by love for the city and care for the people, Qiao Zhenshan successfully helped Zhou Guohua complete the mission. However, as victory was imminent, Qiao Zhenshan sacrificed himself heroically to protect Qiao Erbao... Li Changyi gradually fell behind in the struggle of wits against the Liberating Army. He was deeply impressed by Zhou Guohua and Qiao Zhenshan's heroism and broad-mindedness. At the same time, he was disgusted by the treacherous and ruthless acts of Wang Jingtang and others, feeling sorrowful for the decaying rule of the Kuomintang government. The traditional soldier’s pride did not allow him to surrender to the Communists, yet his inadequate strength could not break the stalemate of the battlefield. In desperation, Li Changyi decided to personally leave the city to meet his adversary, striving to take control of his own fate. Outside the city, he witnessed the disciplined Liberating Army, even in the cold winter, setting up camp outside the village without disturbing the civilians. Reflecting on this, he recognized that the failure of the Kuomintang troops was an inevitable part of history and thus resolved to lead his troops to revolt.
