At the turn of the 1990s, the international situation was turbulent and unpredictable, and the scenery here was not solely beautiful; beneath the calm lay restlessness and change. Just graduated from university, Xiao Lin (played by Chen Daoming) has not yet been assigned a house and is managing a small and trivial happiness with his girlfriend Li Jing (played by Xu Fan) in cramped conditions. Xiao Lin works at a government agency, where apart from him and Xiao Peng, everyone else, including Director Zhang (played by Xiu Zongdi), Old Sun (played by Zhang Tong), Old He (played by Zhou Guozhi), and Old Qiao (played by Xu Xiulin), are seasoned elders. The young people are heedless, and yet within the seemingly harmonious office, undercurrents are brewing; no one is easy to deal with. For their own interests, these smiling faces engage in both overt and covert politics, elevating office politics to an easily unlearnable art. Xiao Lin, immersed in this environment, inevitably gets influenced, representing the myriad of lives in the new China... This film is adapted from Liu Zhenyun's novel of the same name.
