The story takes place during the Qing Dynasty. Wang Ning (played by Jin Lili) escaped the palace twenty years ago with her nursing daughter. Now, her daughter Liu Rushi (played by Ma Qianshan) has grown into an extraordinarily talented beauty. She falls in love at first sight with the literary leader Qian Qianyi (played by Li Ming), and they eventually marry. However, a major upheaval in the court shakes the foundation of their love. Regent Dorgon (played by Chen Daoming) arrives at Nanjing, and the Southern Ming Dynasty collapses. Unable to bear the suffering of the common people, Qian Qianyi hands over the city of Jinling.
