In 2008, the global subprime mortgage crisis broke out, and the Chinese market was also greatly affected, with countless families being eroded by economic pressure. Qin Chuchu (played by Shen Aojun) and Bai Liandong (played by Gong Zheng) both lost their jobs and struggled to find new ones without success. Chuchu's friend He Chanjun (played by Ye Qianyun) had her father-in-law reported and imprisoned, leading both He Chanjun and her husband to lose their jobs as well. He Chanjun sent her husband to work in Shenzhen while she thrived in the insurance industry using her intelligence. To support her family, Chuchu began working in insurance, which she originally looked down upon, alongside He Chanjun. Bai Liandong also became a painter. Initially, when Chuchu started her business, her relatives avoided her, and her mother-in-law ridiculed her for bringing shame. Just then, Chuchu made her first sale—car insurance for her cousin Xun Dali. Afterwards, Chuchu took a different approach and developed many clients in the county where her cousin lived, giving her hope. Bai Liandong was unhappy being a painter and still harbored dreams of painting. Three years later, He Chanjun had become a business manager and even bought a pre-sale apartment in the city, while Chuchu's family remained stagnant. To pay for her son’s education, Chuchu started working in corporate insurance, often coming home drunk, and even ended up in the hospital with a stomach bleed. Chuchu managed to gather her son’s tuition, but Bai Liandong's income remained meager, and his dark suspicions about Chuchu's fidelity gradually surfaced. Bai's mother further fueled these suspicions, causing arguments between the couple, and Bai Liandong eventually moved to live at the construction site. Bai Liandong began to form his own construction team. At a class reunion, Chuchu re-encountered her first love, Ling Yu (played by Chen Zhipeng), who, as the CEO of a listed company, had always remembered her. He asked Chuchu to help him sort out the insurance for a newly acquired subsidiary, leading to further interactions between them. Ling Yu's wife, Yang Lu (played by Zhao Xuelian), was domineering, and Ling Yu had long grown tired of his marriage, secretly preparing to divorce Yang while bribing Yang Wei's (played by Zeng Jiang) assistant Zhao Shu to expand his own power. Xun Dali’s father tragically died in a car accident, and because the relatives were not covered under the three-party insurance plan, Chuchu's company refused to compensate. She lost her standing among relatives and neighbors and her credibility was shattered. Xun Dali sued the insurance company. Meanwhile, Ling Yu arranged for Zhao Shu to find someone to set fire to a construction site under his real estate company; as a result, workers from Bai Liandong’s construction team suffered severe injuries, and Bai Liandong was imprisoned. Company CEO Wang Zeng pressured Chuchu with threats and incentives, and she, overwhelmed, committed perjury, resulting in Xun Dali losing the case. Just when Qin Chuchu felt isolated and helpless, Ling Yu introduced many of his connections to help her secure corporate policies, and she quickly became the top sales representative at the company. He Chanjun, who had secretly liked Ling Yu, grew jealous of Chuchu, and the two women began to compete in work and feelings, putting their friendship on the verge of collapse. During this time, taxi driver Xiao Ran entered He Chanjun's life, and she was touched by his gentleness and attentiveness. Bai Liandong was released from prison. The four of them appeared to live an outwardly calm life. Bai Liandong received an anonymous call claiming that Qin Chuchu had been using her body to exchange for insurance policies. Bai Liandong then discovered that Chuchu had met with Ling Yu, leading even He Chanjun to tell him to keep an eye on his wife. Bai Liandong filed for divorce and sought a living outside, eventually finding success in painting after facing hardships. Xiao Ran’s wife and child came looking for him, and he left He Chanjun, deeply hurting her, which caused her to fall ill. Qin Chuchu came to care for her, and the two sisters ultimately reconciled. He Chanjun’s husband Wu Youwen (played by Peng Bo) returned home, and He Chanjun felt she could no longer afford to be hurt; she vowed to have a good life with her husband, resigning from insurance to run a tea restaurant with him. Ling Yu never gave up on Qin Chuchu, promising her the best life, and Chuchu no longer refused, moving into a villa with him and her mother-in-law. She truly experienced a luxurious life and realized she had fallen in love with Ling Yu. Yang Lu eventually discovered Ling Yu’s betrayal, trying various methods to humiliate Chuchu. Overwhelmed, Chuchu left Ling Yu. Ling Yu felt the time had come to cut ties with the Yang family and proposed a divorce to Yang Lu, but Zhao Shu betrayed him, leaving Ling Yu with nothing. He resolutely eloped with Chuchu. Once calm, Ling Yu began to panic, unable to accept a life of having nothing after holding a high position. He left Chuchu and returned to Yang Lu. Chuchu was left with nothing; reflecting on her journey, she realized she had abandoned her principles during her cousin's lawsuit. Qin Chuchu found a lawyer to prepare to testify again. She won the case, resigned from the company, but gained respect from everyone. Bai’s mother was critically ill, and in her final moments, she brought her son and daughter-in-law’s hands together. After Bai’s mother passed away, Bai Liandong left again. An insurance company hired Qin Chuchu as a quality supervisor for business. She lived a simple life with her son. On New Year’s Eve in 2011, Qin Chuchu and Buqi watched the CCTV Spring Festival Gala at home when the doorbell rang. When they opened the door, it turned out to be Bai Liandong returning.
