During the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty, Xue Rengui from Jiangzhou, Shanxi, learned literature and martial arts from his master Li Jing since childhood. He was intelligent, had an astonishing appetite, possessed immense strength, and acted chivalrously. At the age of eighteen, Rengui lost his parents, his house was burned down, and all his possessions turned to ashes. In his time of poverty, he sought help from his uncle but was refused. Fortunately, he was rescued by Wang Maosheng and his wife, and they swore brotherhood. Wang Maosheng introduced Xue Rengui to work as a laborer in the home of Liu Yuanwai. Liu's daughter, Liu Yinhuan, was touched by Rengui's chivalrous spirit and secretly aided him with love, defying her father's opposition. The two escaped Liu's house and joyfully wed in a humble abode.
Tang Taizong Li Shimin was pursued by officials from Bohai and was saved by a young general in white robes, but it turned out to be a nightmare. The military strategist Xu Maogong interpreted the dream, stating that the young general was the future pillar of the state, revealing that the "dream minister" was Xue Rengui from Longmen County, Shanxi. The King of Bohai, who had been conferred by the Tang Dynasty, was incited by the general Tieshiwen to rebel against the court, unwilling to remain in Bohai (now around the Bohai Bay in Liaoning). In order to suppress the rebellion, Li Shimin decided to lead the charge himself and summoned troops from across the country, ordering the chief vanguard Zhang Shigui to recruit Xue Rengui, the "dream minister," in Shanxi.
Emperor Li Daozong was wary of the accomplishments of the old general and veterans from the Wagang faction, fearing that the "dream minister" would threaten his position. He thus adopted the strategy of his favored concubine, the beautiful Zhang, ordering her father-in-law Zhang Shigui to "win over when close, eliminate when distant."
Having just started a family and living on a meager income from hunting, Xue Rengui joined the army at the encouragement of his friend Zhou Qing. However, due to the interference of the treacherous general Zhang Shigui, Rengui faced several obstacles in enlisting. Eventually, with the help of Lord Cheng Yaojin, he achieved his goal but was assigned a position in the fire brigade. Although Xue Rengui was skilled in both literature and combat, he faced humiliation and bullying in the military under Zhang Shigui, He Zongxian, and Zhang Zhilong, enduring many hardships. Nevertheless, he held great aspirations, enduring humiliation and continuing to be resilient.
Zhaoyang Princess, the daughter of the King of Bohai, sought to prevent the Bohai army from rebelling against the Tang, creating enmity with General Tieshiwen. Failing to assassinate Tieshiwen, she and her maid Ling Cai'er fled the palace with a peace treaty mandated by the King of Bohai, heading directly to the Tang court.
Luotong was captivated by the beauty of Princess Zhaoyang and intended to serve her, seeking assistance from Lord Cheng Yaojin, which allowed the princess to petition Li Shimin. Princess Zhaoyang was grateful to Luotong but felt no romantic inclination.
After learning of Princess Zhaoyang heading to the Tang court to negotiate peace, Tieshiwen sent assassins to pursue her. In a panic, the princess encountered bandit Li Qinghong, who attempted to capture her as his wife. Fortunately, Xue Rengui saved her, and this led to the development of their feelings. Rengui successively subdued seven bandits, including Li Qinghong, forming a brotherhood to serve together in the military.
During the campaign against the Bohai rebels, Xue Rengui showcased his exceptional martial arts, leading the fire brigade vanguard and achieving numerous victories, gaining the favor of Li Shimin. However, Zhang Shigui claimed all of Rengui's merits for his son-in-law He Zongxian, crafting a conspiracy against Rengui, rendering him reluctant to reveal his identity, and forcing him to work anonymously in the camp as a cook. Eager to meet the "dream minister," Li Shimin followed Xu Maogong's strategy to test military personnel through the "Longmen formation" and "Pingbo theory," but Zhang Shigui's deceit thwarted their desire.
Liu Yinhuan gave birth to twins, a boy named Xue Dingshan and a girl named Xue Jinlian. Yinhuan fully supported her husband Xue Rengui's efforts to quell the rebellion and protect the country, taking on the domestic responsibilities, enduring hardship to raise their children, receiving aid from Wang Maosheng and his wife.
On his way to suppress the rebellion, Li Shimin was besieged by General Tieshiwen at Phoenix Mountain, and all twenty-six generals escorting him were killed by Tieshiwen’s "Nine-Leaf Flying Daggers." To relieve the siege at Phoenix Mountain, all members of the fire brigade fell victim to Tieshiwen’s wife Mei Li's centipede toxin. Although Princess Zhaoyang tried her best to save them, it was ineffective. Li Qinghong and Jiang Xingben perished, but Rengui and other brothers were fortunately rescued in time by the renowned Li Jing. Meanwhile, the Tang army fell victim to a false strategy in Sijiang and Yuehu City, becoming trapped until Qin Huaiyu and Luotong arrived to rescue them from danger.
Xue Rengui recovered and cunningly captured Phoenix Mountain, rescuing the Tang emperor Li Shimin, while Tieshiwen fled in defeat. Rengui led Zhou Qing and the fire brigade in a victorious pursuit, achieving a decisive victory at Mont Tian, overcoming the challenges of Motian Ridge, and cleverly seizing Baiyu Pass. Ultimately, Tieshiwen met his end under Rengui's "Longmen formation," and the rebel forces were annihilated.
Zhang Shigui’s plot to steal credit and harm Xue Rengui was uncovered by military strategist Xu Maogong. As a result, Zhang Shigui resorted to murder to silence witnesses, attempting to burn Rengui alive in Tianxian Valley, but Rengui cleverly escaped. With the help of loyal subjects Xu Maogong, Cheng Yaojin, and Wei Chigong, Li Shimin finally encountered the "dream minister" Xue Rengui, and the truth was revealed. Zhang Shigui's conspiracy was exposed, leading to his rebellion and siege of Chang'an, but Xu Maogong strategically dispatched Rengui to Chang'an, resulting in Zhang Shigui's defeat and capture, facing justice for his crimes. The rebellion was quelled and the world united.
Li Shimin returned to the capital, rewarding contributions. Xue Rengui was conferred the title of "One-Character King" and commander of the imperial forces, while Zhou Qing and the fire brigade members were honored as generals. Xue Rengui returned home in glory, finally reuniting with his wife Liu Yinhuan and sworn brother Wang Maosheng after thirteen years. Xue Rengui valued loyalty and righteousness, appointing Wang Maosheng as the chief steward of the general’s mansion and treating his father-in-law Liu Yuanwai with kindness. With the imperial decree of marriage from Tang emperor Li Shimin and Liu Yinhuan's understanding, Princess Zhaoyang also became Xue Rengui's wife.
Zhang Shigui's daughter, the favored concubine of Emperor Li Daozong, Zhang Meiren, demanded revenge for her father and brother. Li Daozong forged an imperial decree, setting a trap to frame Xue Rengui, leading to Rengui's imprisonment in the heavenly jail…
