Christina (Kathrin Sass) is a staunch supporter of socialist East Germany. Her husband has escaped to West Germany, leaving her to raise their two children, Arianne (Maria Simon) and Alex (Daniel Brühl). In 1989, Alex is arrested during a street protest, and when Christina witnesses this, she suffers a heart attack and loses consciousness for a while. When she wakes up, the familiar country she knew has changed—the Berlin Wall has fallen, and the socialist state of East Germany has collapsed. The doctors say Christina cannot be subjected to any more stress. As a result, Alex goes to great lengths to create a world from the past for his mother. In this way, she is able to live in the former East Germany: from the neighbors' clothing to news broadcasts, even substituting canned goods for Soviet food. However, Alex's well-meaning efforts cannot hide the overwhelming reality. Eventually, he tells his mother about the changes in East Germany in his own way.
