The Tongbai region, rich in natural resources and strategically important, has long been the battleground for the Zhang, Zhu, and Yang families, who have been contesting their interests for generations. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, this struggle transformed dramatically, intertwined with national hatred and family grievances.Zhu Guoliang, the eldest son of the Zhu family, graduated from Whampoa Military Academy and became a general in the Central Army. Zhu Guodong, the second son, formed a security unit with the support of the Kuomintang, while Zhang Shijie, the second son of the Zhang family, chose a different path by secretly joining the Communist Party. The eldest son of the Yang family became a bandit.Against the backdrop of cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, Zhang Shijie, following the Party's arrangements, gave up the chance to join the New Fourth Army with his childhood sweetheart Yang Ziyun. He went undercover in the Tongbai region, navigating between the Kuomintang and the bandits as a young businessman, accomplishing seemingly impossible tasks. Meanwhile, the cunning Zhu brothers, envious of Zhang Shijie's remarkable business talent and his reputation among the people, grew suspicious of his Communist identity and repeatedly plotted against him, trying to eliminate him…After the Wangnan Incident, Zhang Shijie inadvertently discovered that his beloved Yang Ziyun had married Zhu Guozhu, the third son of the Zhu family, and had become friends with the Japanese invaders. Zhang Shijie's emotional world was shattered, leaving him despondent. Fortunately, he was awakened by Guo Bingxue, who had secretly loved him. After many twists and turns, Zhang Shijie married his maid Zhong Wutong, which left Guo Bingxue in utter despair. In her anger, she married the bandit leader, Yang Kaitai, who had long admired her, becoming the mistress of the bandit stronghold…The Zhu brothers pretended to resist the Japanese while secretly refusing to let Zhang Shijie off the hook. As Zhang Shijie dealt with the Zhu family, he cooperated with Yang Kaitai, with Guo Bingxue's support, to fight against the Japanese invaders, gaining broader support from the local populace. Zhang Shijie rescued important intelligence personnel from the Japanese prison vehicles, only to find out that they were Yang Ziyun and Zhu Guozhu, who had infiltrated the Japanese camp as a married couple to steal intelligence. At this point, Zhang Shijie had already become a father, left to grieve in silence. Faced with Zhang Shijie's wife and children, Yang Ziyun suffered immensely, choosing not to reveal the truth about her false marriage with Zhu Guozhu to Zhang Shijie. Instead, she coordinated with Zhu Guozhu to continue intelligence work in the Kuomintang-controlled area.Zhang Shijie's mother, Li Yujie, had long refused to accept Zhang Ruohong's marriage to Yao Sizhong. When Yao Sizhong unexpectedly returned home in a Kuomintang special commissioner’s outfit, he gained Li Yujie's approval for the first time. However, during the fierce battle between the enemy and us, Zhang Ruohong discovered her husband's true identity as a traitor. Yao Sizhong brought the Japanese, killing Zhang Shijie's brother and his family. Filled with hatred, Zhang Shijie meticulously set a trap to capture Yao Sizhong, and Zhang Ruohong, acting decisively, killed her husband whom she had longed for six years. With the outbreak of the Civil War, the Zhu family regained power, and the Communists temporarily withdrew. After capturing the sick and wounded Communist soldiers, the Zhu brothers brought them before Zhang Shijie to probe for information. To protect the revolutionary forces, Zhang Shijie was forced to watch his comrades being killed, enduring immense psychological torment. To gain further trust from the Zhu family, Zhang Shijie pretended to surrender his armed forces to the Kuomintang, then hid away, bearing the blame and secretly regaining strength… In his troubled life, the only solace was that his sister Zhang Ruohong had grown into a revolutionary fighter and secretly joined the Communist organization.Soon, the Communist Party retook Tongbai, and the Zhu family fled in a panic. The land reform movement began vigorously. Eager to bridge the distance with her husband, Zhong Wutong, with Zhang Ruohong's help, actively participated in the revolution. Mr. Zhu, unwilling to part with his family's property, secretly sneaked back to seize the house deed but was shot and killed when discovered. Zhang Shijie tried his utmost to enlist Yang Kaitai's bandit group, but Yang Kaitai's stance remained ambiguous, and Guo Bingxue's heartfelt persuasion was deemed as lingering affection for Zhang Shijie. The Zhu family organized a return team, attacking during a brief withdrawal of the Communists, consecutively killing Zhong Wutong and Zhang Shijie's father. Zhang's mother Li Yujie and Zhang Ruohong narrowly escaped, while younger brother Zhang Shijun was taken hostage. Zhang Shijie endured immense pain from the destruction of his family and spent his entire fortune, using his exceptional business acumen to circulate the currency of the Communist Party in the Tongbai region, resolving a significant issue in establishing a revolutionary base.As the revolution approached victory, Yang Ziyun and Zhu Guozhu failed in subversive activities within the Central Army, and were killed along with Zhang Shijun. With Guo Bingxue's help, Yang Kaitai and Zhang Shijie united again and, in fierce battles, the Zhu brothers were shot dead. During the anti-bandit operations before liberation, Yang Kaitai was mistakenly killed by the Communist anti-bandit team, leaving Guo Bingxue in inconsolable grief. After the establishment of the new China, Zhang Shijie unexpectedly declined leadership positions and started a primary school, becoming a rural teacher, gathering the orphans of martyrs he had sheltered during the revolutionary period.
