Twilight love stories converge to reflect the difficulties of remarriage for the elderly. "Empty Nest" mainly tells the story of three elderly individuals from different socio-economic backgrounds and life experiences, all living equally lonely and isolated “empty nest” lives. The trailer showcases a series of stories that feel authentic and natural, as if they have happened right around us. Among them, a twilight romance involving the character "Hao Mingjun," played by Xi Meijuan, stands out, not only as a major highlight of the show but also reflecting the social reality of the challenges elderly people face in remarriage. "Hao Mingjun" and old restaurant owner "Lao Qiao" have feelings for each other, but numerous factors obstruct their relationship, and the barrier between them remains unbroken, further complicated by their children's involvement, making their union even more difficult. In real life, the issue of remarriage among the elderly has also become a social focal point, with children claiming they want their parents to enjoy a happy old age, yet do they truly understand what kind of love and warmth the elderly actually need? Actress Fu Jing is unwittingly caught in a love triangle. The young actress Fu Jing plays a somewhat complex character from the "Beijing drifter" group, who has intricate and unbreakable ties with the three families in the show, and she is inexplicably drawn into a love triangle that is destined to end in her own failure. She is simple and kind-hearted, one-sidedly in love with her employer’s divorced son, who is already attached to someone else. Her inner turmoil drives her to contemplate self-harm. The character "Jiang Jiang," played by Fu Jing, epitomizes the awkwardness and hardships faced by migrant workers; their love and lives deserve just as much attention. Is a love contract born of love or helplessness? Fu Jing's character "Jiang Jiang" agrees to become her boss Xie Yihan’s (played by Ma Yuan) “contract girlfriend” to keep her job, pretending to be a couple in front of his parents to win their favor. Unexpectedly, the two young people end up complicating things, leading to much distress for Yihan’s mother (played by Zhang Shaohua), who not only experiences disappointment but also gains additional worries. The "contract love" between these two young people is also a highlight of the show that is both humorous and sadly relatable. Many young people in real life face the same frustrations as the characters in the show, dealing with their elders' relentless pressure to settle down "before it's too late," making "contract love" a reluctant option. We must believe that all starting points are well-intentioned; elderly people hope their children will settle down soon, while children wish their parents would feel at ease, yet is there no better way to express these actions that arise from love but are steeped in helplessness? Those who watch this show are likely to find the ideal answer.
