The twenty-episode television series "Urban Emotions" is adapted from the novel "Fear and Madness" published by the Masses Publishing House, directed by renowned director Wu Tianming, depicting urban emotions and recreating the stories of ordinary people's lives. In a grand old house of the Cui family located in a bustling city, there reside four families: the Ku family, Gu family, Yang family, and Wang family, all of whom are common people with different professions and personalities. Each has faced numerous difficulties and setbacks in life but loves life and pursues happiness, always holding their heads high and bravely battling against adversity, striving to step out of the shadows and change their living conditions. The reflections of their myriad lives showcase the hardworking and kind-hearted grassroots individuals as the mainstream of society, demonstrating the spirit of self-improvement and resilience. Through their perspectives, the mysterious corner of the city is unveiled. The Ku family has four sons and one daughter. The male head of the family repairs bicycles after retirement, while the female head sells breakfast and scavenges. They have been deceived and even mistaken for thieves, leading to a series of troubles. The eldest son, Weizhong, respects and loves his parents and siblings while often secretly supporting the family with funds from his wife, all the while accepting small gifts from contractors as pocket money. The second son, with a master's degree, works successfully in the provincial capital; the third son, Weisheng, after being demobilized, hustles to find a good position but is late for work after saving an unfamiliar city committee member, leading to his dismissal by the ruling party's officials. However, this twist of fate propels him into a better position working under Secretary Meng of the city committee, and his love story with Gu Hua is particularly moving. The fourth son, Weili, is fired for skipping work to go to bars, yet he successfully blackmails for money while holding a fake bomb, an act that is both outrageous and reasonable. The daughter, Mingli, initially refuses to bear children but becomes willing to conceive after her husband, Bingshan, is laid off and gets help from son-in-law Jianfeng of the Wang family to work as a cleaner. After Bingshan accidentally runs over a rich woman's pet dog while driving a watering truck, Mingli injures herself while trying to borrow money for compensation, resulting in a miscarriage, yet Bingshan continues to love her deeply. The Gu family has five daughters; the male head repairs shoes while the female head is a seamstress. The eldest son-in-law, Yahui, shows cold indifference to his wife Gu Ping after being promoted and indulges in debauchery. In seeking revenge for Gu Fang, he offends Zhang Famins, the factory director, and his youngest daughter is kidnapped. Ultimately, he and his mistress perish in a fire accident, leaving Gu Ping in disgrace. The second daughter, Gu Fang, risks her marriage for a business deal, particularly proud of her wealth and coldly ignoring her sister Gu Qin, who is in difficulty. Her husband, Wenming, tries to kill someone in his desperation to gain a government position, prompting her to reflect on her past coldness only after facing calamity. The third daughter, Gu Qin, marries her neighbor Yang Hongjun; the fourth daughter, Gu Hua, is a taxi driver who twice threatens her parents with suicide to pursue her love with Weisheng, showcasing courage by standing up to a wolf-like man and returning lost money, creating urban legends. The fifth daughter, Shengnan, is intelligent and hardworking, eventually becoming a freshman at Peking University. The Yang family has one son and two daughters. The eldest daughter, Hongxia, has a disabled child for whom she exhausts her finances, but later is allowed to attempt pregnancy again. The younger son-in-law, Jiang Tao, is misled into a scam gang, causing chaos, while Hongjun runs around, trying to pay his debts. Their son, Hongjun, works as a foundry worker and is resentfully dismissed due to his secret help for Gu Fang’s business. He withdraws from urban life and, supported by Secretary Meng, starts a pig farm in the countryside. Through hard work and enduring numerous hardships, he eventually achieves some success and later establishes a big business with the backing of a wealthy uncle in Taiwan. His wife, Gu Qin, initially loves him, but begins to value social status over him because of his humble position. However, she firmly rejects temptation from the textile factory chief, Ye Weitong, but ultimately suffers job loss and helps Hongjun with the pig farm. Unable to endure poverty, she tragically falls into the life of a "companion girl," which Hongjun discovers, leading to their divorce; yet, she still loves her husband and daughter deeply. Hongjun, meanwhile, finds affection in the younger sister of a helper, Miao Xiang, but respectfully declines. In the end, Gu Qin, while selling sex, is caught by Ye Weitong, the deputy director of the public security bureau, yet Hongjun, despite the difficulties, manages to raise funds to bail her out and report the problems of Zhang Famins and Ye Weitong to Secretary Meng. The Wang family has one son and one daughter. The male head has endured a tumultuous life but gains happiness in his later years. The daughter, after several years of suffering during the Cultural Revolution, completely changes her fate. The son-in-law, Jianfeng, is honest but faces dangers of being framed. Secretary Meng has keen insight and recognizes talent, helping Jianfeng to overcome his "Waterloo" and entrusting him with important responsibilities. The son, Fengshou, was wrongfully imprisoned for ten years and, after marrying a farmer girl, Miao Yu, sustains the family by selling vegetables, saving a modest amount. The various street stories arising from his vegetable selling are both humorous and thought-provoking. Fengshou and Miao Yu, eager to get rich quickly, naively deposited 50,000 yuan into an unofficial savings association for high interest but end up with nothing, only obtaining a house. However, this house soon faces foreclosure due to developer debts, stirring up fresh troubles—legal disputes and fighting for justice. Soon, with Secretary Meng’s attention, the house is returned to its rightful owner. They work hard, unite with their neighbors, and exemplify traditional virtues of the Chinese nation.
