The 26-episode television drama adapted from Bi Shumin's realism novel, with the same name, starts airing tonight during prime time on BTV-4. Sarina plays the role of a wicked mother for the first time, but she herself stated that the hardest role to play is actually that of a mother in real life. The story begins in the early 1970s. The protagonist, Pu Xiaoti, excels academically and has grand ambitions. After graduating from middle school, she and her classmates, Zhen Zhicheng and Bai Erbao, were initially prepared to go to the countryside, but they were assigned to work as laborers in a shipyard instead. Lao Yao, who was responsible for the assignments, used to be part of the shipyard and has a terrible reputation among the workers, which led to Pu Xiaoti and her friends being "affected"—the masters at the shipyard were unwilling to take them on as apprentices. Before the new workers even got to hold a welding gun, they were assigned to dig air-raid shelters. In order to prove themselves, Pu Xiaoti led Zhen Zhicheng and Bai Erbao to work hard and strive to be the best, successfully changing everyone's impression and becoming official apprentices. Although the daily work is exhausting, Pu Xiaoti continues to study diligently. Her efforts pay off as her poetry is published in newspapers, and she becomes a key player in the women's basketball team and a cultural mainstay at the shipyard. Her excellence, kindness, and beauty attract many admirers, including Zhen Zhicheng and Bai Erbao, who are among the many suitors. Zhen Zhicheng is kind-hearted and sincere but struggles to express his feelings, silently supporting Pu Xiaoti in every way. Bai Erbao is articulate and charming but avoids heavy lifting at work, relying more on his verbal skills. While both pursue Pu Xiaoti in their own ways, she is consistently preoccupied with her classmate Gao Haiqun, who has gone off to serve in the military. Ning Xilan, who also harbors feelings for Gao Haiqun, works at the city library. Pu Xiaoti considers her a best friend and always lends a helping hand when Ning Xilan faces difficulties. However, Ning Xilan feels jealous of Pu Xiaoti and, when Pu Xiaoti asks for help in getting a library card, she makes excuses and refuses to assist. To ensure Pu Xiaoti can access the books she wants to read, Zhen Zhicheng tries various means, even spending nights copying books by hand. Unfortunately, he is reported for copying the "forbidden book" *Second Handshake* and ends up imprisoned. Misunderstanding Zhen Zhicheng, Pu Xiaoti grows angry at his lack of ambition. Bai Erbao seizes the opportunity to aggressively pursue Pu Xiaoti, becoming increasingly unscrupulous in his tactics. While Pu Xiaoti is appalled by his relentless advances, she finds herself at a loss for how to fend him off. During one work incident, Bai Erbao bothers Pu Xiaoti and unintentionally injures his leg. Initially feeling guilty, Pu Xiaoti takes care of him, inadvertently giving Bai Erbao more chances to get close to her. Bai Erbao uses the "work injury" as leverage, pressuring the factory to arrange a meeting between him and Pu Xiaoti, hoping she would agree to marry him. This catches Pu Xiaoti off guard, further fueling her dislike for Bai Erbao. The workshop director and masters take turns talking to her, even Master Hao, who brought Pu Xiaoti into the factory, speaks favorably of Bai Erbao. Under pressure, Pu Xiaoti ultimately marries Bai Erbao despite her mother's strong opposition. After their marriage, Bai Erbao's laziness and selfishness quickly become apparent. At this time, the country resumes college entrance examinations, and Teacher Zhong urges her two best students, Pu Xiaoti and Ning Xilan, to seize the opportunity. Pu Xiaoti's ambition is reignited, as she yearns to fulfill her dream of attending college, but Bai Erbao strongly opposes this. Pu Xiaoti initially intends to fight against him, but soon discovers she is pregnant, and Bai Erbao's mother pressures her by threatening to die for a grandson. For the sake of the family, Pu Xiaoti reluctantly gives up on the college entrance exam. Bai's mother, who is still entrenched in feudal thinking, eagerly awaits a grandson from Pu Xiaoti. When she learns Pu Xiaoti has given birth to a daughter, she is greatly disappointed and refuses to help care for the child as previously promised. Pu Xiaoti's mother has also been avoiding her since she disregarded her family's opposition to marry Bai Erbao. Pu Xiaoti must bear the burden of raising her daughter alone. Zhen Zhicheng, who has been released from prison, sees all of this and feels deep remorse for not having taken better care of Pu Xiaoti. Yet, Pu Xiaoti comforts Zhen Zhicheng, encouraging him to face all difficulties with a smile.
