OverviewThe TV series "Cang Qiong Zhi Shang" is adapted from the novel of the same name by Japanese author Jiro Asada, co-produced by China and Japan. The original work is quite a unique novel, as the author Jiro Asada writes historical novels from a Chinese perspective, completely stepping out of a Japanese viewpoint. This book has consistently topped the sales charts in Japan over the past decade. The plot unfolds around the topic of the Pleiades (Mǎo, the destiny star): a poor young man named Chun'er (played by Yu Shaoqun), who survives by picking up frozen cow and horse dung from the streets, encounters an astrologer known as Baipo. Baipo tells him he is the reincarnation of the Pleiades, and his destiny is akin to that of Emperor Qianlong and Qin Shi Huang, proclaiming that in the future he will "gather all the treasures of China into his hands." Her prophecy sustains the unfortunate Chun'er as he continues to live, and after his brother dies of starvation, he self-castrates to enter the palace. Through a series of struggles and sacrifices, he becomes a prominent figure by Empress Cixi’s side, succeeding Li Lianying's position, seemingly fulfilling Baipo’s words... However, he inadvertently gets caught up in the whirlpool of politics.“Cang Qiong Zhi Shang” is set in the late Qing dynasty, taking the Qing palace as its stage, with Empress Cixi as a backdrop. It centers around a poor boy played by Yu Shaoqun, narrating his growth and transformation in humanity through various hardships amidst societal changes and life's trials, and comparatively elaborates on a fierce struggle within the court during the late Qing period. The young Emperor Guangxu and his beloved Concubine Zhen, along with righteous ministers, advocate for self-improvement, reform, resisting foreign humiliation, and rejuvenating China. Concubine Zhen passionately supports Guangxu's reforms, while Cixi degrades her to "noble person" on the pretext of her violating court laws and erects a prohibition sign at her door stating "Concubines must not interfere in state affairs." Despite being in a precarious situation, Concubine Zhen still worries about the emperor's implementation of new policies. Guangxu is deeply moved by her concern for the nation and its people...
