In the late 1970s and early 1980s, China was full of untapped potential. A senior welder in a factory, Lao Tie (played by Li Youbin), is straightforward and highly skilled, earning the admiration of everyone in the factory. He takes on two apprentices, Xie Siyu (played by Lü Xing) and Ouyang Shui (played by Guo Jiaming). Xie is steady but cunning, while Ouyang is honest and helpful. By chance, Lao Tie also takes in a troublesome little apprentice, Xu Feng (played by Xia Yu). Xu Feng's parents went to Africa for aid work when he was very young, and due to a lack of guidance, he is like a wild horse, constantly causing trouble. Later on, after his parents die in Africa, Xu Feng is specially recruited into the factory but continues to misbehave.
