In the late Qing Dynasty, in a small town in Jiangnan. The matriarch of the Rong family (played by Gui Yalei) knows that her husband is cohabiting with a courtesan named Yan Hong in the city, and it seems that he has no intention of coming home. This is all because the matriarch has not borne children for many years. To bring her husband back home, she sets her sights on the daughter of a tenant farmer, Xiu He (played by Zhou Xun), because Xiu He has the exact same face as she did when she was young. She decides to use her to win back her husband's affection and to ensure the continuation of the Rong family. However, what happens next is beyond anyone's imagination. The Rong family's younger uncle (played by Huang Lei) falls in love with Xiu He, and they engage in intimate relations. When Xiu He becomes pregnant, the entire family is overjoyed, until a more shocking truth emerges - it turns out the husband is incapable of fathering children, and Xiu He's pregnancy becomes the greatest irony.
