The TV series is divided into five units, each reflecting the romance and beauty of ancient Chinese love stories from different perspectives. The poor scholar An Xiushi (Li Jie) travels to the capital for the imperial examination and is deceived by the unscrupulous merchant Zhou She (Shen Xiaohai), losing both his money and possessions.
