Lin Wuge (Deng Chao) and Guo Sanmei (Li Xiaoran) are childhood sweethearts. Sanmei is ambitious and progressive, while Wuge only wants to be a good doctor, leading to a divergence in their life choices. The snobbish Guo father wants to marry Sanmei off to a warlord as a concubine and rejects Wuge's proposal. Sanmei escapes from her wedding in the rain to join the revolution, and Guo father, fearing family disgrace, falsely claims that Sanmei has hanged herself. Upon hearing the news of Sanmei's death, the warlord abducts the second sister. In a critical moment, Wuge steps forward and claims the second sister as his fiancée. To protect the Guo family and the second sister from danger, Wuge marries her. In the end, the second sister is kidnapped by the Japanese army while trying to save Wuge, and Sanmei falls to the guns of the Japanese army. Wuge finally takes up arms and heads to the battlefield to fight for his family and his nation.
