"Common People Scholar Official" tells the story of Qiuji Village in Huang'an, Hubei during the late Qing Dynasty, where there is a scholar nicknamed "Ha Ha". He is exceptionally knowledgeable and talented; however, he detests the officialdom and refuses to seek fame, choosing instead to stay home to study and farm, wishing for a peaceful life. The scholar's wife, a plump woman, is meddlesome and harbors a deep hatred for evil. At times, she gazes affectionately at her husband and at times exerts her authority, always ensuring he obeys her. She often intervenes when witnessing injustice, taking on various troubles that pile up, but usually lacks the strength to tackle them alone, thus turning to her husband for help. Consequently, they find themselves entangled with the local bully Qiu Jinguang, the rogue Xie Quezi, and the incompetent county official He Jiu Gui, leading to escalating complications that become increasingly difficult to escape...
