In the year 690 AD, Wu Zetian declared herself emperor and renamed the country Zhou. One day, a "ghost shadow" appeared in the "Lan Yuan" palace, which had been uninhabited, along with a mysterious red liquid. The emergence of the "ghost shadow" cast a terrifying atmosphere over the people. Subsequently, the national treasures stored in the Treasure Building for foreign envoys to visit were all stolen, and the treasures transported from Chang'an for exhibition were robbed, throwing the court into chaos. The empress Wu Zetian, upon hearing this news, was furious and ordered Di Renjie to solve the case with urgency. To investigate the whereabouts of the treasure and the real culprit, Di Renjie visited the prison and sought the help of the famous thief Feitian Hu, promising him freedom upon success. Feitian Hu then sought assistance from his sworn brother, the Poison Wolf. Soon, they recovered the treasures. Just as people were busy celebrating, Feitian Hu suddenly went missing. At this moment, Deputy Chief Li, also known as Gong Gong, was brutally murdered in the palace. Just when one crisis seemed to pass, they discovered that all the recovered treasures were fakes. Meanwhile, a court lady from the border, Murong Yu, recognized her former lover, Men Gu Liang, as today’s constable Lin Ruxue. However, to her surprise, Lin Ruxue did not acknowledge her, and after many twists and turns, they finally reconciled. During this time, Tao Gan, who had deeply fallen in love with Murong Yu, could only bury his feelings in his heart. Just when the investigation into the "Lan Yuan Ghost Shadow" case was nearing its conclusion, an even more troubling incident occurred on a deep night. A servant of the envoy from the Dashi Kingdom, Wilson, suddenly died in a remote cottage in the wilderness, leading to strong dissatisfaction from the Dashi Kingdom. They did not trust Di Renjie, who was appointed by Empress Wu, to solve the case, and instead called for the famous detective Morse. At this point, Di Renjie was poisoned by a mysterious person, nearly fatally. Morse quickly identified the person who poisoned Di Renjie as the biological daughter of Li Gonggong, Cao Hua. Wu Zetian wanted to interrogate Cao Hua personally, but unexpectedly, Cao Hua turned on Di Renjie in court, insisting that all actions were directed by him. With everyone's efforts, they finally found a breakthrough from Cao Hua and captured the Chief Minister Wang Defu and the Minister of Rites Liang Shiqing. Interestingly, Liang Shiqing was one of the "ghost shadows" that appeared in the palace. As the case became increasingly convoluted, Tao Gan found himself caught in a whirlpool of emotions; Dashi Kingdom’s Lusha was wholeheartedly in love with him, while Tao Gan was in love with Murong Yu. Meanwhile, Morse, who deeply loved Lusha, constantly sought challenges with Tao Gan. The tangled case and complicated emotions intertwined, becoming a confusing mess...
