The story takes place in the early years of the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. The young girl Wei Yingluo (played by Wu Jinyan) is selected to enter the palace alongside other young maidens. Yingluo is beautiful and intelligent, with a noble character; however, her reason for entering the palace is different from that of the other girls. After her sister is murdered, Yingluo is determined to investigate the murderer in the Forbidden City.
