In the summer of 1985, the famous young Qianyi actress Xiao Yuehong from the Zhao Capital Peking Opera Troupe was confronted by her former lover He Zhongxin. Xiao Yuehong filed for divorce from her clown actor husband Zhao Mingliang and took him to court over the custody of their daughter Zhao Lihua. In court, Zhao Mingliang skillfully argued his case for custody using his eloquence as a clown actor, winning the judge’s favor. In a moment of desperation, Xiao Yuehong fabricated a lie that their daughter was not Zhao Mingliang's biological child in order to gain custody. Their legal battle became a sensational topic in the city, stirred up by Wu Zhiqiang, the troupe leader who envied Xiao Yuehong, and his wife Ma Yanli. Xiao Yuehong planned a farewell performance, but the usual supporting actors, out of sympathy for Zhao Mingliang, were reluctant to join her. Unexpectedly, Zhao Mingliang volunteered to accompany Xiao Yuehong in performing her signature work "The Drunken Concubine." Years ago, this very play had enchanted Zhao Mingliang, who had served Xiao Yuehong like a concubine for many years. Their heartfelt performance on stage moved the audience deeply. The farewell show was unprecedentedly spectacular and successful. That night, Xiao Yuehong took one last look at her daughter, left her makeup box for her, and stepped out of the door. That night, Zhao Mingliang decided to change his name to Zhao Qingshan (played by Li Baotian) and his daughter to Zhao Xiaoping (played by Niu Xinxin), starting a new life with her. However, the idea that "the daughter is not his own flesh and blood" had seeped into his heart like poison, leaving him restless and becoming an indelible shadow in his future life... Would his love for his daughter diminish? Would his daughter’s love for him change? What touching, sigh-inducing, and amusing stories would unfold between this "first ugly" of Zhao Capital and his daughter, who had a natural talent for Peking Opera and loved the art deeply? The 30-episode TV series "Clown Dad" revolves around the ethical familial relationships and fate entanglements of two generations, incorporating the themes of affection, love, friendship, as well as confusion, perseverance, and struggle from a unique artistic perspective. It presents the rise and fall of Chinese opera troupes after the reform and opening-up through witty and humorous storytelling filled with character conflicts and the texture of life, shaping a group of distinct and vibrant opera performer images and reflecting their sense of responsibility and noble character in striving to inherit Peking Opera amidst difficulties.
