The story takes place in the Aba region of Sichuan before the liberation. The local chieftain Lao Ma Qi (played by Liu Wei) is backed by the Kuomintang and is a notorious bully in the area, surviving by growing opium poppies and producing and selling opium, and he has his own armed forces. The neighboring chieftains do not dare to compete with him. He has two sons; the handsome eldest son (played by Ren Qing) is his heir, while the dimwitted second son (played by Li Jie) has long been excluded from succession.
