On this day, tears flow across the world; it is the public's strong naval might. How the once-dominant Beiyang Navy was established, became the foremost in Asia, and ultimately sank into the sea leading to its demise. A true recreation of the Sino-Japanese War, the Port Arthur Massacre, the Korean War, the Liaodong Campaign, the Battle of Dandong, the Battle of the Yellow Sea, and the Weihaiwei Campaign. In 1855, Minister of Navy Shen Baozhen established the Fuzhou Naval School, nurturing the first batch of young naval officers who later became commanders of the Fujian Navy and the Beiyang Navy. On March 31, 1877, some of these outstanding naval officers went to the Royal Naval College in the UK for further study, carrying the heavy expectations entrusted to them by their country. Meanwhile, after the Meiji Restoration, Japan quickly purchased and manufactured warships and dispatched officers to study in the UK, becoming their future adversaries. In 1874, Japan used the pretext of the murder of sulfur ball fishermen to bombard Taiwan and land troops. At 1:50 PM on August 23, 1884, the Battle of Ma-Jiang erupted; in 1888, the world-renowned Beiyang Navy was officially established, boasting two large ironclad ships, eight cruisers, six gunboats, sixteen torpedo boats, five training ships... totaling 56 vessels and over 4,000 officers and men. In 1894, the Sino-Japanese War broke out over Korea; at 7:45 AM on July 25, the Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on the Beiyang Navy fleet at the mouth of the Yalu River. The Japanese Army forcibly landed in Korea under the fleet's escort, launching a fierce attack on the Qing forces stationed in Pyongyang. At 12:50 PM on September 17, a major naval battle between the Beiyang Fleet and the Japanese Combined Fleet occurred in the waters of the Yellow Sea — the first steam-powered ironclad naval battle in human history. On November 6, the Japanese army captured Jinzhu. On November 7, Empress Dowager Cixi celebrated her 60th birthday by watching operas for three days; on the same day, the Japanese army captured Dalian and began advancing towards Port Arthur. From November 22 to 25, the Japanese Army’s First Division, commanded by General Yamashita, conducted a shocking four-day massacre, resulting in the slaughter of 20,000 Chinese, with only 36 Chinese survivors left in the city of Port Arthur, who were there to bury the dead. Subsequently, Haicheng fell, and the Japanese forces advanced towards Shanhaiguan on the Liaodong Peninsula. On January 20, 1895, the Japanese army attacked the Shandong Peninsula. The Beiyang Navy retreated to Liugong Island to hold out for reinforcements, running out of ammunition and supplies.
