"Five Easy Pieces" (in Chinese: 轮流传), a Hong Kong TV series, premiered on August 4, 1980, directed by Gum Kwok Leung. The first five episodes were directed by Johnnie To, while the sixth to tenth episodes were directed by Hsu Yu An, with Wong Kar-wai as his assistant director, and An Xi serving as the series coordinator. Originally planned as an 80-episode series, it was moved to Saturday after the 15th episode due to poor ratings compared to TVB's "A Love of Our Time," and was abruptly cut off after the 22nd episode when the female lead, Huang Ying Xia, married her first husband. This made it the first TVB drama to be abruptly canceled. However, the eponymous theme song, composed by Gu Jia Hui and sung by Cheng Shao Qiu, became popular and was selected as one of the top ten Chinese songs by Radio Hong Kong in 1980.
Storyline
The original outline of the story was to depict the social changes experienced by five women from youth to old age. However, the series was cut short at Huang Ying Xia's wedding. According to content published in television magazines at the time of airing, the original story also planned to depict Huang Ying Xia's divorce from her husband and her meeting with a police officer played by Lam Ka Wah, who later moved to Canada due to the anti-corruption storm at the time, leaving Huang Ying Xia alone in Hong Kong. The story highlights the stark wealth disparity in 1960s Hong Kong, the economic boom of the 1970s, and the concerns of the 1980s regarding immigration and uncertain prospects. It also addresses the role changes of women in this new era amid societal transformations.
