This story takes place during the latter part of the Anti-Japanese War, focusing on the struggle for the penicillin strain and formula developed by Chinese scientists. Various factions including the Japanese Tokko, the Kuomintang military intelligence, and Shanghai gangsters compete to seize it, while members of the Chinese Communist underground work tirelessly to protect it. The plot is full of twists and turns, shrouded in mystery, with numerous enigmas and unexpected character designs that amaze the audience. The politically naive surgeon Chen Huilin (played by Tong Lei) eventually takes up the surgical knife for revenge; the seemingly gentle psychologist Xi Yiminlang (played by Lin Baoyi) turns out to be a Japanese spy; the detestable Wang Kewen (played by Liao Fan) becomes a sous-terranean Communist party member after a turn; the kind-hearted elder Zhang Shaohua takes on the role of a gang leader "Hong Jie", much to her delight; and the seemingly mad old man in the morgue is revealed to be "Yu Meiren" (played by Wang Kuirong), the leader of the Communist underground organization that the Japanese are trying to capture.
