After the "July 7 Incident," the Kuomintang and the Communist Party set aside their grievances to fight together against Japan. Li Demei (played by Jia Yiping) is implicated because of his fiancée's Communist identity and is classified as a suspect by the Sichuan Army. To allow his nephew Li Demei to participate in the war, Commander Lin Xiuran (played by Zhou Mingshan) uses every means at his disposal. After securing a way into the military through connections, Li Demei incites public anger and must prove his courage through action by taking on the role of commander of the suicide squad of the entire division. However, in his first battle, he suffers severe losses due to a fierce bombardment from the Japanese army.
