In 1945, on the eve of the Japanese invaders' demise, in a remote border county in the northwest of China, at the foot of the undulating mountains in Caojia Gully, the hunter Cao Changjiu accompanied by his gun spends his days wandering in the mountains and forests. He deeply loves the beautiful woman Bai Xiuxiu, who has fallen into disrepute due to her father's opium addiction.
