A mining disaster occurred at the Lianhua Gully gold mine in Xihe City. The mine owner and general manager of Xin Yue International Club, Leng Xiaoyue, was on her way to the scene when she suddenly received a directive from a behind-the-scenes figure relayed by Liu Fengying, the female owner of Hongying Art Gallery. Leng then passed this order to Jin Yuliang, the manager of the gold company, who relayed it to the foreman, Cui Tianbao. Thus, a major mining disaster was transformed into an incident with injuries but no fatalities. Xueshan is the recently resigned city party secretary Lin Weiju's son-in-law, who transferred to the municipal supervision bureau. When he returned to his hometown, Tujinao Village, to visit his mother, he discovered that several gold farmers were missing. He went to the shantytown for an investigation with a female lawyer he met there, Sha Yeshuang, but they were kidnapped and “sent back” to the city. The discovery made by Xue and Sha caught the attention of the new city party secretary, Wu Wei, who ordered relevant departments to investigate, but there were no results. Xiaorouzi found Xueshan and revealed that his father died in the mining disaster and that their family had been silenced. Disguised, Xueshan infiltrated the mine and, with the help of Xiaorouzi and Village Chief Ding along with other gold farmers, discovered the bodies of several dozen people who had died in the disaster hidden away. This case drew serious attention from upper echelons, and a special task force was established with Xueshan as the head of the investigation team. Foreman Cui Tianbao received a secret report in advance and fled the area, but later surrendered after being persuaded by Leng Xiaoyue, taking all the blame for concealing the bodies upon himself. Xueshan and others had evidence sufficient to break Cui down, but on the way to transport him, Cui died in a car accident. The investigation team found the phone number from the call Cui received before his escape, pointing towards Jin Yuliang. However, Jin Yuliang then went missing. During his flight, Jin was pursued multiple times, leading him to fear and confusion, as only his wife Liu Fengying knew his whereabouts. To save his life, he eventually surrendered. Initially, he remained silent during questioning, but after his classmate, Lin Weiju's former secretary, Li Bishu, visited him, he confessed and took all the blame. Because Jin had been pursued, Xueshan and others believed there was someone else behind him, but they lacked evidence. At this time, under the pressure from his fiancée Lin Wenshu and future father-in-law Lin Weiju, Xueshan left the special task force to study at the provincial party school. Jin Yuliang was sentenced to a suspended death sentence, and in court, he suddenly cried out for justice, claiming he had evidence to uncover the truth of the case. However, afterward, he retracted his statement and refused the suggestion of his defense lawyer Sha Yeshuang to appeal. Hearing the news, Xueshan returned to Xihe and was reprimanded by Lin Weiju, but Wu Wei retained him. Jin Yuliang's son, Jin Yuan, was studying abroad and hurried back specifically for his father's case. He discovered that his mother Liu Fengying had provided certain evidence that led to his father's severe sentence, and he questioned her. It turned out that for many years, Liu Fengying had an affair with the behind-the-scenes figure, and now to preserve herself and that individual, she had to betray her husband, which caused her great pain. Unable to cope with her son's questioning, she sought help from Leng Xiaoyue, who skillfully manipulated the situation, leading Jin Yuan into her embrace. It was time for the gold mining season again; Wu Wei and Mayor Situ Jinghu formed two factions over whether to regulate the mine or resume mining immediately. Leng Xiaoyue bribed Xueshan's younger brother Xueyuan, making him take over as foreman after Cui Tianbao, and mobilized gold farmers to enter the mountain. Xueshan heard the news and intervened, leading to a quarrel between the brothers. Subsequently, Xueyuan brought gold farmers to the city government to cause a disturbance, resuming operations at the mine. Xueshan’s attempts to interrogate Jin Yuliang were repeatedly blocked, and Jin was then detained elsewhere. Following Leng Xiaoyue’s instructions, Xueyuan forcefully occupied a gold well of Xuedilong, but then Xueyuan was ambushed by Xuedilong, and his whereabouts became unknown. Leng Xiaoyue seized the opportunity to confine Xueyuan in the mountains and fabricated a rumor to slander Xueshan. Xueyuan escaped control and returned to Xihe City, where Leng Xiaoyue again took him from the hospital to control him at Xin Yue. While monitoring Leng Xiaoyue's phone calls, Sha Yeshuang discovered that another mysterious woman was involved behind the scenes in the gold mine case. However, only her voice was heard, and her name was unknown. Sha and her assistant tracked the women entering and leaving Xin Yue, yielding no results. She bribed a bar girl, but the latter was spotted by Leng Xiaoyue's people while gathering information in Xin Yue. Upon learning this, Liu Fengying became very anxious. Xueshan consistently opposed Sha Yeshuang's methods, but he found the information gathered from the monitoring to be very important. Based on Xueshan's suggestion, Sha Yeshuang played recorded phone calls for Jin Yuliang, who recognized the mysterious woman's voice as his wife Liu Fengying's, which shocked him, but he did not inform Sha Yeshuang. Sha sent her assistant to Hongying Art Gallery to record Liu Fengying's voice, but they were discovered. Sha Yeshuang was then prosecuted for illegal phone tapping. Xueshan took responsibility for her actions. Sha was exempted from criminal penalties, but her law firm was revoked. Lin Wenshu had long harbored resentment towards Xueshan for her interactions with Xueshan, and upon seeing Xueshan sacrifice his own reputation to save Sha Yeshuang, she could no longer suppress her anger and threw Xueshan’s belongings out of the Lin family home. Leng Xiaoyue held a grand engagement ceremony for Xueyuan and her assistant Xiaoli Cat in Tujinao, and an angry Xueshan rushed back to his hometown to stop it, but his brother drove him out of the courtyard by force. After enduring numerous hardships, Xueshan became disheartened and announced his marriage to Lin Wenshu. After returning from their honeymoon, Xueshan intended to continue his studies at the provincial party school, but Wu Wei accused him of being a deserter. Lin Wenshu sympathized with her husband’s inner turmoil and suggested he reconcile with Sha Yeshuang to continue investigating the case. With the efforts of Wu Wei and Xueshan, the provincial high court sent back the case of Jin Yuliang for retrial in Xihe. While in prison, Jin was attacked, surviving but becoming insane. Liu Fengying, upon hearing the news, was even more tormented, but the behind-the-scenes figure thought Jin's madness was beneficial for everyone. Xueshan arranged for Jin Yuliang and his son to meet to test the authenticity of Jin's madness, but found no results. Xueshan went into the mountains in search of evidence but was ambushed along the way, leading to a crashed vehicle and injuries. Xueshan pretended to be severely injured and secretly disguised himself as a gold farmer to infiltrate the mine again. After great peril, he found important evidence that revealed the involvement of a behind-the-scenes figure manipulating the mine, colluding with Leng Xiaoyue and others to steal state mineral resources for immense profit, though he did not know who this person was. Meanwhile, Sha Yeshuang, after days of following, finally uncovered Liu Fengying's interactions with a mysterious man but still did not know who he was. When the clues subsequently led back to Jin Yuliang, Jin was released on medical parole due to illness. Liu Fengying “protected” Jin Yuliang, refusing any contact with others. Jin was not insane and angrily accused Liu Fengying of betrayal. Liu Fengying, in tears, found herself speechless. She was then compelled to follow the orders of the behind-the-scenes figure to give Jin Yuliang medication that would render him foolish. Lin Wenshu discovered her father's secret relationship with Liu Fengying and the evidence related to the case. Unable to choose between her father and husband, she chose to take her own life. The truth of the case was finally revealed; Leng Xiaoyue was arrested, Liu Fengying confessed, and Lin Weiju was killed in a car accident before his daughter's grave. Ultimately, conscience triumphed over evil…
