Emperor Shunzhi, Fulin (played by Deng Chao), ascends to the throne in his youth with the support of Regent Prince Dorgon and his mother, Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang (played by Pan Hong). His entire boyhood is overshadowed by Dorgon's tyranny, and despite having grand ambitions and ideals, he is constrained at every turn. The proud and jealous nature of the Empress often clashes with the young Emperor, who doesn’t like his cousin and thus distances himself from her.
