This is a story with a certain nostalgic tone. The narrative takes the audience back to the tumultuous years between 1925 and 1945, where a prominent Korean family in the Songnen Plain of Northeast China is preparing to celebrate the 60th birthday of the patriarch Han Yuantai. The story unfolds from there. Han Yuantai is the head of the Han family; although uneducated, he is shrewd and calculating, yet at the same time charitable, broad-minded, and clear about right and wrong. His eldest son is dutiful and obedient but has no descendants, which has always been a source of worry for him. His second son, who returned from studying abroad, is eager to engage in industry with his beloved Yang Yunyun to save the country, but with the advent of the Japanese puppet regime, he soon finds himself defeated in the unequal competition against Japanese merchants, losing years of savings in an instant. The eldest daughter is one of the few rebellious women of that era; she is bold and fiery, abandoning class distinctions to elope with the headstrong Fan Tianbao, hoping to live the simple life of an ordinary farmer. However, in such turbulent times, these simple ideals also shatter. The youngest daughter of the Han family, originally a timid and quiet girl, joins the anti-Japanese rescue movement under the guidance of her teacher Ma Xiao. After witnessing Ma Xiao's arrest and execution by hanging, her character undergoes a dramatic change. She resolutely joins the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army and becomes a brave female soldier in the resistance.
