The battle in the county town gave Li Xiangyang's team a great reputation, sending the Japanese troops into a panic. Watanabe, skilled at flattering those in power, was promoted to Colonel by Japanese commander Okamura. Watanabe was quite fearful of Li Xiangyang's elusive tactics, and with the mindset of avoiding trouble rather than seeking merit, he shrank back in the county town, leading to a temporary peace between the work team and the Japanese. Watanabe busied himself all day trying to please the intelligence expert, Seiko, sent by Okamura, enjoying his life until the arrival of Matsui Koji, who was bent on avenging his brother, finally broke the brief calm.
The Eighth Route Army's telegraph codes were deciphered by the Japanese army, causing serious disruptions to our communications. Technician Zhang Wen, who had returned from studying in Japan, was ordered to update the codes in the liberated area. However, while passing through the county town, he was unexpectedly detained by Watanabe. Li Xiangyang led a team to rescue him, but just as they were about to succeed, a group of bandits from Beituo Mountain appeared. The two groups worked together to repel the Japanese army's interception, and Li Xiangyang greatly admired the skills of the bandit leader Zhang Zuobiao. In the chaos, Zhang Wen was taken away by Zhang Zuobiao to the mountain, and Li Xiangyang had no choice but to go plead for his release.
The notorious bandit leader Shangguan Hong was a well-known figure in the area, repeatedly robbing Japanese military supplies and causing them considerable trouble. The bounty on his head was even 1,000 taels higher than that on Li Xiangyang. Unbeknownst to them, he was actually a false hero, relying entirely on Zhang Zuobiao's bravery to maintain his reputation. When Li Xiangyang went to Beituo Mountain to demand Zhang Wen's return, Shangguan Hong, coveting Zhang Wen's beauty, was unwilling to hand him over and instead sent Zhang Zuobiao's sister, A Qiao, to impersonate him. He also plotted to provoke Zhang Zuobiao into challenging Li Xiangyang to a duel. Li Xiangyang saw through Shangguan Hong's tricks and instructed Old Hou and the others to pretend to leave the mountain first, while he took advantage of the bandits' unpreparedness to sneak around the back of the mountain to rescue technician Zhang Wen. During the duel, Li Xiangyang cleverly navigated the life-and-death situation, winning without a scratch, earning Zhang Zuobiao's respect, and the two developed a mutual admiration. To avoid alarming Shangguan Hong, Li Xiangyang discreetly took A Qiao, who was impersonating Zhang Wen, down the mountain to meet with Old Hou and the others. Shangguan Hong, enraged to learn that Zhang Wen had been rescued, incited a desperate Zhang Zuobiao to pursue Li Xiangyang. Shortly after Zhang Zuobiao left, Cui Fugui, acting on Li Xiangyang's orders, returned A Qiao. Suddenly, gunfire erupted in Beituo Mountain, startling everyone. It turned out that Matsui, eager for revenge, believed Li Xiangyang was likely hiding in Beituo Mountain, so he brought people to raid the bandit stronghold. The empty Shangguan Hong was caught red-handed, and Cui Fugui was also captured. Zhang Zuobiao and Li Xiangyang engaged in a gunfight with Matsui, being outnumbered. Li Xiangyang was injured while trying to save Zhang Zuobiao, and A Qiao was deeply moved, using her street skills to treat his wounds.
Matsui held a grand celebration in the county town for his victory, parading Shangguan Hong and Cui Fugui through the streets to showcase his power, secretly laying traps for Li Xiangyang to fall into. Li Xiangyang discussed a rescue plan with Zhang Zuobiao; Zhang Wen volunteered to use a transmitter to draw Matsui's main force out of the city, while Li Xiangyang would take the opportunity to lead a team into the city to rescue him. Matsui indeed fell for the ruse and marched out with a large contingent chasing the transmitter. Li Xiangyang and Old Hou split up to act, setting fire to the Japanese troops' grass fields on one side while sneaking into the prison to rescue people on the other. Shangguan Hong was frightened out of his wits by the Japanese and, during his escape, revealed his hiding place. Zhang Zuobiao, in an attempt to rescue Shangguan Hong, tragically sacrificed himself and entrusted A Qiao to Li Xiangyang in his last moments. Shangguan Hong was captured again and, in a bid to save his life, became a traitor. Li Xiangyang led Cui Fugui and others to fight their way out of the county town.
The loss of her brother left A Qiao heartbroken. Li Xiangyang comforted her kindly, promising to let her join him in fighting the Japanese, thus adding another fierce warrior to the work team. A Qiao was intelligent and clever, but her temper was fiery, and her impulsive actions repeatedly violated discipline, leaving Zhang Wen particularly disdainful of her. A Qiao also couldn't stand Zhang Wen's intellectual and quiet demeanor, and before Li Xiangyang, the two became like "natural enemies." A Qiao discovered that Zhang Wen often secretly sent telegrams behind everyone's backs, making her actions highly suspicious. She reported this to Li Xiangyang, but Zhang Wen had reasonable explanations and turned the tables, accusing A Qiao of being sneaky. Everyone thought it was just another petty feud between the two and paid little attention until several of the work team's plans and hideouts were mastered by Matsui, which finally raised Li Xiangyang's alertness. He set a trap to test Zhang Wen and, indeed, discovered some clues.
The superior secretly informed Li Xiangyang that a leader of the Eighth Route Army, codenamed Number Two Chief, would be passing through the county town, and Li Xiangyang was required to ensure their safety to the next contact point. A Qiao found Zhang Wen sending another secret telegram. Just as she was about to report it, she accidentally exposed her whereabouts, and the two of them ended up fighting. Zhang Wen intended to kill A Qiao but was stopped by Li Xiangyang, who arrived just in time. Faced with Li Xiangyang's interrogation, Zhang Wen could no longer deny it and finally admitted that she was actually a military intelligence agent, dispatched this time to execute a covert mission in the base area. Out of national righteousness and for the sake of joint resistance against Japan, Li Xiangyang did not make things difficult for Zhang Wen and politely asked her to leave. Believing she was doomed, Zhang Wen was completely conquered by Li Xiangyang's actions and voluntarily expressed her willingness to stay and resist Japan together. The others hesitated, but Li Xiangyang unexpectedly expressed his belief in Zhang Wen, trusting that she still had the blood of Chinese people in her veins, which greatly moved her.
Zhang Wen reminded Li Xiangyang that the Japanese might have learned through deciphered messages about Number Two Chief's passage, making the county town a den of danger. Li Xiangyang decided to exploit the rift between Watanabe and Matsui to disrupt Japanese plans and seize the chance to send people into the city. The work team devised a trap for Watanabe and spread false information, making Matsui believe that Number Two Chief was with the work team. Eager for achievements, Matsui took his main forces out of the city to pursue. During this time, Number Two Chief and his team stealthily blended into the city. Matsui opened fire on the work team, disregarding Watanabe's safety, intent on killing him amidst the chaos, which Watanabe deeply resented. Shortly after pursuing, Matsui suddenly realized he had fallen for a diversion tactic and hurried back to the city to redeploy defenses. The city gate was tightly shut, and the Japanese were searching for suspicious individuals, putting Number Two Chief in grave danger.
Things were extremely urgent, and Li Xiangyang decided to send Watanabe back to cause trouble. He and Cui Fugui played off each other successfully, convincing Watanabe that Number Two Chief had already gone far, and Matsui was eager to kill him to seize power. Watanabe fell for the trick and rushed back to confront Matsui. Upon returning to the county town, Watanabe quickly regained control of the situation, lifting the curfew imposed on Matsui. Just as Number Two Chief was about to escape danger, he unexpectedly encountered Okamura arriving in the county town for inspection, and was stopped right outside the city gate. Efforts were in vain, and Old Hou and the others couldn't help but sigh in disappointment. Backed by Okamura, Matsui regained power, while Watanabe was dispatched to guard the city gate. Li Xiangyang and his work team once again took risks to infiltrate the county town. The Japanese defenses were tight, and to ensure the leader's complete safety, Li Xiangyang secretly visited Shangguan Hong, appealing to national righteousness and using Zhang Zuobiao's death to inspire him. Shangguan Hong finally switched sides and agreed to assist them from within. After careful planning, the work team launched a strong attack on the eastern gate guarded by Watanabe. The frightened Watanabe was caught off guard and barely resisted before allowing the work team to ride out of the city. With Shangguan Hong's cooperation, Li Xiangyang successfully drew Matsui's pursuers out to the old muddy gorge outside the city, where Matsui's troops suffered heavy losses in the swamp. Meanwhile, Number Two Chief secretly escaped through a small path and reached the front line as scheduled.
After the battle had subsided, Li Xiangyang and his work team stayed alert, ready to receive new orders at any time. They would continue to operate in the extensive hinterland, burying the Japanese invaders in the vast sea of people's war.
