This is the story of a man betrayed by fate, a passionate tale of fighting, continuing to fight, and never-ending battles. Day after day, Simon, a boy from the underground village of Jiha, constantly digs with his drill and has gotten used to it. However, his friend, known as "Big Bro" Kamina, constantly shouts about the so-called world above ground. "Break through the sky and see the world above!" Kamina thinks this every day but has never succeeded. Until one day, a gigantic mechanical monster known as the "Face" breaks through the village's ceiling and enters to wreak havoc. Confirming the existence of the world above, Kamina becomes excited and, along with Yoko, a girl from the surface, and his younger brother Simon, confronts the Face and pilots the machine—"Lagann"—that Simon accidentally dug up, breaking through the ceiling and reaching the surface world! The surface of the Earth is revealed to the boys and girls, but in reality, there are many more "Faces" on the surface, and the adventure of constantly battling begins.
