Xiao Lian (played by Xu Huaiyu) is a carp spirit living in the pond of the young lady Mu Dan (played by Sun Li). In her leisure time, playful Xiao Lian enjoys transforming into Mu Dan's appearance to roam the human world. One day, by chance, Xiao Lian is saved by the scholar Zhang Ziyou (played by Guo Jinan), forging an unbreakable bond. However, Zhang Ziyou is already secretly engaged to Mu Dan, but her father unilaterally arranges her marriage to the son of a general. Tragically, Mu Dan, unable to resist, finds herself being carried off in a bridal sedan chair despite Xiao Lian's attempts to help her thwart the arrangement, which ultimately proves futile. Mu Dan unexpectedly dies of sorrow in the sedan chair, and at the same time, Zhang Ziyou arrives at the scene.
