After the catastrophic event known as the "Second Impact," the world rebuilds atop the ruins. 14-year-old Shinji Ikari is called to the city of Tokyo-3 by his father, Gendo Ikari. Expecting a warm welcome from his father, he instead encounters massive beings known as "Angels" engaging in combat with the military. In a moment of crisis, Misato Katsuragi from the organization NERV rescues Shinji and takes him to the NERV headquarters led by Gendo. However, the welcome Shinji receives is a cold command from his father: to pilot a giant humanoid robot called "EVA" to fight the Angels. Initially refusing, Shinji changes his mind upon seeing the injured substitute pilot, Rei Ayanami, and decides to obey his father's orders. Thus, with no combat training, Shinji prepares to pilot the EVA Unit-01 to confront the Angels.
As the Angels continue to assault, the mysterious Rei Ayanami and the newcomer from Germany, Asuka Langley Soryu, challenge Shinji, a 14-year-old boy facing challenges far beyond his capabilities. Meanwhile, Gendo observes everything impassively, while a mysterious plan called the "Human Instrumentality Project" unfolds according to his designs.
