"The Great Doctor" was produced at a cost of 30 billion Korean Won, making it Korea's first 3D television drama. The royal guard of the Goryeo dynasty, led by General Choi Young (Lee Min Ho), is tasked with escorting the Yuan dynasty princess (Park Shi Yeon) and the new king of Goryeo, King Gongmin (Ryu Deok Hwan), back to Goryeo. However, they are ambushed by forces dispatched by Gi Cheol (Lee Woo Seung). The Yuan princess, unfortunately, is injured in an assassination attempt, and her survival is critical to the fate of Goryeo. In a desperate attempt to save her, Choi Young seeks the help of the "great doctor" who travels through the "Heavenly Gate" (2012) and meets modern-day doctor Yoo Eun Soo (Kim Hee Sun) during a lecture. Because Yoo Eun Soo can heal injuries similar to those of the Yuan princess, Choi Young brings her back with him. Eun Soo believes she is filming a location scene and, after saving the princess, thinks about going home, unaware that she has become embroiled in Goryeo's political intrigues. As they interact, feelings begin to develop between her and Choi Young. What kind of fate will they face?
