On the surface, Tougou Nanako (voiced by Furuya Shijika) appears to be a cute and slightly airheaded black-haired girl, but the prominent wind-up key on her back reveals her true identity — a girl robot modified by the Doctor (voiced by Konno Hiromi). Although she feels very self-conscious about the wind-up key behind her, the Doctor always refuses to help Nanako with modifications, citing her cuteness as a reason. In Nanako's 1st-grade Q class, many of her friends gather — the overly lively and often explosive Aiba Yuko (voiced by Honda Mariko), the artsy girl Nagahawara Mio (voiced by Aizawa Mai), who often gets lost in fantasies about same-sex relationships, and the seemingly quiet yet sharp-tongued model student Mizuuma Mai (voiced by Togashi Misuzu). Thus, a daily life filled with quirky antics and fierce banter unfolds among these three.
