Kōya Maditō (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai) is a very introverted young man who struggles to express his thoughts through words. However, he ends up in the company's first sales department, where the daily tasks put tremendous pressure on him. One day, Kōya unexpectedly meets a man named Masashi Nishioka (voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya) on the street; this seemingly frivolous and glib man is actually a member of the dictionary editing department. Masashi discovers Kōya's talent for compiling dictionaries and invites him to join the editorial team, starting the work on the dictionary "Great Ocean." This leads Kōya to meet the deeply passionate about words, Kōbō Araki (voiced by Tetsuo Kanou), the devoted Tomoyuki Matsumoto (voiced by Hayato Matsuda), and the very diligent and practical Kaoru Sasaki (voiced by Yoshiko Sakakibara).
