Jang Geum (played by Lee Young-ae) was born into a lowly family. Her father, Seo Tae-su, was originally an officer in the Inner Guard, ordered to administer poison to the deposed Empress Yun. After Empress Yun’s son, King Yeonsangun, ascended the throne, Tae-su resigned to protect himself. On his way, he saved Jang Geum's mother, and they married, living in hiding. Unexpectedly, King Yeonsangun seeks revenge for his mother and orders the arrest of everyone involved in her death. Tragically, Jang Geum's mother dies during their flight, and on her deathbed, she urges Jang Geum to enter the palace.
