Yohei Kamishima (played by Jiro Sato) has been a recluse for 11 years since the age of 38, finally escaping his room three years ago, making him a "hikikomori survivor." After his escape from isolation, he opened a yakitori restaurant with the help of local people, but struggled to have proper conversations with customers, still working on his reintegration into society. Yohei is asked to be a part-time lecturer at a municipal junior high school. Principal Toru Sakaki (Katsuhiro Takahashi) aims to have someone with hikikomori experience support students who refuse to attend school, and he has chosen Yohei for this role. Amidst school social worker Aiko Isozaki (Honami Suzuki) and young teacher Yoshiko Fukano (Yui Sakuma) struggling to manage a classroom for these students, this was a groundbreaking idea.
