Just after the Spring Festival in 937, a new star suddenly appeared on the Shanghai opera stage—Xiao Bai Yu Shuang, the adopted daughter of the legendary pingju queen Bai Yu Shuang, known as Li Zaiwen. She was bought into the household by Bai Yu Shuang's adoptive mother, Li Bianshi, at the age of 5. Since Bai Yu Shuang did not pass on her skills, Xiao Bai Yu Shuang learned the art of pingju solely through stealing techniques. When Bai Yu Shuang suddenly eloped, Xiao Bai Yu Shuang was temporarily "captured" to take the lead in performances at just 15 years old. The portrayal of Bai Yu Shuang in this film is played by Yan Xuejing, who was quite impressive and embodied the essence of Bai Yu Shuang at that time. Xiao Bai Yu Shuang's fate may be even more unfortunate than that of Bai Yu Shuang. She too was orphaned at a young age, neglected and subjected to violence by her grandmother and adoptive mother. She relied on stealing to learn the art. Due to Bai Yu Shuang's elopement, she faced immense pressure at just 15 and confronted the brutal realities of society. After struggling to gain fame, her mother returned and forbade her from performing. In the end, she could not escape the Cultural Revolution, dying with resentment. Her grandmother also systematically forced her to smoke opium. This film is best viewed alongside the 1994 version of Bai Yu Shuang. The content regarding Xiao Bai Yu Shuang is largely consistent. This film elevates and embellishes her story; she was fully aware of her partner's wife and children before her first marriage, which was beyond her control. Did the actresses of that time have better choices? Her awareness was not that high initially, and when she faced a bully for the second time, she cannot say she was blameless. I really enjoy dramas that tell the stories of female artists during the Republic of China era; they are all historical reflections of bitter and helpless lives endured through the ages.
