In 1938, by the banks of the Bailong Lake in Huizhou County, Southern Anhui. Outside the city, gunfire roared, and the entire city was in panic. Japanese soldiers were about to enter the city. However, the renowned local merchant, Old Master Zeng, was holding a grand celebration at his residence, brightly lit and hosting performances to celebrate his birthday. The gate of Shuangfeng Tower was wide open, allowing neighbors, regardless of status, to join in and feast while enjoying the performances. Young Master Zeng Yuxue had a secret love for Jis, the daughter of the opera troupe leader — the leading actress of the Huangmei opera, Ji Su. During the performance, he invited Ji Su to the backyard to collect her reward money, intending to take advantage of the situation, but was caught by the maid, Chahua. Ji Su managed to escape, but Chahua tragically fell to her death in the scuffle. Chahua was the fiancée of Yan Peng, the ferryman at the southern ferry of the city, and was supposed to get married that day. Upon learning of Chahua's untimely death, Yan Peng was heartbroken and carried her body back to the ferry in the dead of night. Resolutely, he decided to fulfill Chahua's wish to be married, even in death. While preparing for the funeral, Yan Peng discovered that Chahua tightly held a piece of jade. Connecting it with the Zeng family's strange behaviors, Yan Peng became suspicious. After investigating, he learned that the jade belonged to Zeng Yuxue and that Chahua had been pushed down by him. Yan Peng vowed to take revenge for Chahua. The Japanese military police occupied the Zeng family's Shuangfeng Tower, forcing the patriotic merchant Old Master Zeng to become the head of the maintenance association and demanding the Huangmei opera troupe perform for the Japanese. Both Old Master Zeng and Ji's troupe leader refused to comply, even facing starvation. Seeing his father and the troupe leader's lives at stake under Japanese pressure, Zeng Yuxue stepped in to agree to take the position of head of the maintenance association to negotiate with the Japanese. Old Master Zeng could not tolerate his son's compromise with the Japanese and scolded him for being a traitor, leading to a family conflict. The troupe leader refused to submit to the Japanese and took poison. To save the entire Ji family's troupe, Ji Su agreed to Zeng Yuxue's proposal of marriage, stipulating that it was just for show to protect the troupe and not a real marriage. The guerrilla leader Gong Weiyou, intending to promote unity against the Japanese, personally visited Shuangfeng Tower for a private talk with Old Master Zeng and warned Zeng Yuxue not to become a national sinner. Upon learning of Zeng Yuxue's wedding, Yan Peng decided to carry out his revenge plan on the wedding day. Quietly, he skillfully tipped over the flower boat for the wedding and rescued Ji Su, who fell into the water. Zeng Yuxue, humiliated and furious, mobilized the Japanese to capture Yan Peng. Ji Su, upon learning the truth about the abduction, felt deep sympathy for Yan Peng. During their escape, a genuine love blossomed between them. When pursued by enemies, Ji Su pushed the injured Yan Peng away and returned alone to the Zeng family. Severely injured, Yan Peng was saved by Yang Xiu, the vice captain of the Bailong guerrilla team, who turned out to be Ji Su's junior. Years ago, the warlord Wang Yaozu had taken a liking to Ji Su, and to protect her, the troupe leader had cold-heartedly sent Yang Xiu away, hiding the truth from Ji Su. Unable to endure humiliation, Yang Xiu escaped the Wang family and joined the communist party. After being rescued, Yan Peng actively joined the tide of resistance against Japan, becoming a courageous revolutionary soldier. However, fate brought him and Ji Su together again when he returned to Shuangfeng Tower to recover from his injuries. This time, Yan Peng resolutely decided to take Ji Su away from Shuangfeng Tower. Upon learning that his beloved Ji Su was leaving him, Zeng Yuxue, filled with jealousy, planned his revenge. In his cunning and insidious scheme, Ji Su became a traitor who betrayed Yan Peng to the Japanese. Under Yang Xiu's prejudiced reprimand, Yan Peng misunderstood Ji Su deeply. Heartbroken, Yan Peng, with Gong Weiyou's matchmaking, married Yang Xiu, who loved him dearly. Soon after, Ji Su returned to Shuangfeng Tower and gave birth to a son — Xiaochun. To raise their love child, Ji Su endured Zeng Yuxue's torment, hoping to ultimately hand the child over to Yan Peng. A year later, Yang Xiu also gave birth to a son — Xiaozai. In 1949, when the People's Liberation Army entered the county, Zeng Yuxue forced Ji Su to escape with Xiaochun, knowing that he was not the child's real father. On the way, Zeng Yuxue and Ji Su's family had a confrontation, and he attempted to harm them. At a crucial moment, Yang Xiu, out on a mission, happened to witness the scene and shot Zeng Yuxue dead. An aged Old Master Zeng welcomed the army's entry with joy and, on his deathbed, donated Shuangfeng Tower — this historic building over hundreds of years old — to the new government. Shuangfeng Tower became the office of the Huizhou County government, and Yan Peng and other key officials also moved in. Capable Yan Peng, recommended by Gong Weiyou, became the county magistrate. Ji Su's senior, a fellow revolutionary official, Wei An, harbored dissatisfaction towards Yan Peng's appointment due to personal ambitions. With many matters needing attention, Yan Peng dedicated himself to work. During a flood, he fainted several times on the dam, becoming a widely praised good official among the people. Ji Su concealed Xiaochun's background for Yan Peng's political future. However, an unfortunate illness revealed to Yan Peng that Xiaochun was his own son, and the notoriety of that year’s Ji Su's betrayal incident was also Zeng Yuxue's plot. In his impulsiveness to make up for Ji Su's ten years of waiting, he was determined to live with Ji Su. Stubborn Ji Su, for Yan Peng's future and for her junior Yang Xiu, firmly disagreed. The two were at an impasse for a decade. By the end of the 1950s, Ji Su's son Xiaochun and Yang Xiu's son Xiaozai grew up in different life circumstances; Xiaozai became the head of the county police bureau, while Xiaochun faced discrimination due to his origins and could only express himself through painting. Old cadre Gong Weiyou's daughter, Zhenzhen, grew up beside the heroic Xiaozai, but as she matured, she was gradually moved by the empathy expressed in Xiaochun's paintings and fell deeply in love with him. Xiaozai could not tolerate Xiaochun's love for Zhenzhen, nor Zhenzhen's betrayal. During an art gathering, Xiaozai arrested Xiaochun on charges of misdemeanor, and under Wei An's ulterior motives, gradually framed him as a counter-revolutionary. Ji Su committed suicide for Yan Peng and Xiaochun. To save Xiaochun, Yang Xiu abandoned personal grievances and scolded Xiaozai, disregarding her own illness, and informed Yan Peng, who was working in the countryside. Yan Peng immediately confessed his blood relationship with Xiaochun to the organization. Wei An was overjoyed, believing that he had seized upon Yan Peng’s so-called moral issues, which would keep him from rising again. Old Red Army member Gong Weiyou continuously reported to his superiors that Yan Peng was a good cadre who adhered to party principles. After an organizational investigation clarified Wei An's retaliatory actions, Yan Peng was reinstated as the county party secretary. The organization addressed Xiaozai's narrow-minded and extreme behavior. Xiaochun's issues were ruled as internal contradictions among the people. Yan Peng, Yang Xiu, along with Xiaochun and Zhenzhen, visited Ji Su's grave and recounted this heroic and tragic love story of the unwaveringly loyal woman to the younger generation in love.
