Influenced by the wealthy young lady Ouyang Chunxiao, who promotes new ideas in town, they flee the small town to Guangzhou to escape their unfortunate love lives and marriages. Chen Gui becomes a silk worker, and with Ouyang Chunxiao's help, Shen Mengsu enrolls in Kun'ya Girls' School. At the new school, Mengsu is immersed in new culture and ideology, and meets young teacher and Communist Party member Mai Qiushi.
