The story takes place during the early liberation period, where nurse Yue Xiuqing falls in love with military representative Peng Yong, who is also loved by nurses A Jin and Ding Jinglan. Unfortunately, the organization arranges for Yue Xiuqing to marry Peng Yong's superior, while Peng Yong ends up with A Jin. Thus, two unhappy families are formed. Soon, Yue Xiuqing gives birth to a lovely child whom she names Ru Xia, and Peng Yong has an adorable little daughter named Ru Yue. Not long after, due to political issues, Peng Yong is dispatched, and A Jin flees the country, leaving little Ru Yue to be adopted by Xiuqing.
