In 1911, the Qing government nationalized the already privately operated Sichuan-Han Railway, embezzling the large sums of railway stocks that had been raised and selling the construction rights to British imperialism and three other countries. One day, He Jie encountered Yu Huaili, a top student from Tsinghua School and member of the Sichuan-Han Railway survey crew, and fell in love. However, He Jie's grandfather insisted on marrying her off to his cousin Zhao Jichang. Upon learning of this, He Jie resolutely pledged herself to Yu Huaili, planting the seeds of love.
