In their youth, the four brothers were scattered amidst the vast sea of people after encountering a robbery. Time passes like an arrow, and the bond of blood ties compels children of war to bear national calamities and family feuds, each searching for their own place in the emotions of the mortal world... Tong Shan is an upright official, serving as the supervisor of the Grand Council. He, along with his family, returns to Beijing from Xinjiang under the escort of the chief bodyguard Liu Yuntian of the Zhenwu Hall. On their way, they encounter bandit Hu Xiaotian leading a robbery. In the chaos, except for the fourth son Tong Yuguan, the other three sons go missing. Each of the four sons of the Tong family possesses one-fourth of a fan-shaped jade pendant, which becomes their only token for future recognition. De Yangzhong, a royal relative of the Qing court, covets the beauty of the military general Huo Gang's wife. He falsely accuses Huo Gang of forcefully marrying a beauty selected by the emperor, leading to Huo Gang's family being exterminated, with the entire Huo family of two or three hundred people leaving no survivors, except for the young girl Huo Qingtong, who escapes into "Baihua Lou" under the protection of her wet nurse. Later, Huo Qingtong renames herself Xiao Chai and becomes a famous courtesan; she sells her art, not her body, choosing her partners through dance. The madam of "Baihua Lou," Aunt Jiu, takes in the third son of the Tong family—Tiedan—as her own and raises him alongside Xiao Chai. Tiedan loves Xiao Chai deeply and sacrifices everything to support her. Tiedan grows up in "Baihua Lou," developing a slick personality but still retaining his innocence. One day, while wandering the streets, he encounters Tong Yuguan, the fourth son of the Tong family, who is hiding from the pursuers. They quickly become close friends. The eldest son of the Tong family is adopted by the bandit leader Hu Xiaotian (later renamed Gu Qingsan) and is given the name Gu Renjie. Renjie is talented and learned in foreign affairs, earning much favor from De Yangzhong. Yangzhong arranges for his only daughter, Jinyun, to marry Renjie, but Renjie is reluctant, while Gu Qingsan eagerly accepts for his own gain. Ye Yutong and her father, Pastor Ye, raise funds to build a school. Gu Renjie provides substantial assistance, causing dissatisfaction for Yutong. Renjie and Yutong come to know each other through quarrels that slowly turn into feelings of affection, but Gu Qingsan obstructs them, causing the church to turn to ashes and leaving Yutong with facial burns. Du Kui is one of Hu Xiaotian's subordinates. When Hu Xiaotian intends to kill all his subordinates to keep the loot for himself, Du Kui flees in panic with the second son of the Tong family—Du Lihan. They hide in the alleys of Beijing and survive by relying on a tofu shop. Du Lihan is a passionate young man who often discusses national affairs with Yutong and her father at the church, and by chance, he meets Xiao Chai, leading to instant mutual attraction. Liu Yuntian, the bodyguard of Zhenwu Hall, depends on his daughter Ya'er for companionship. Aunt Jiu has feelings for Liu Yuntian, while Ya'er is interested in Tiedan, resulting in disputes between the two families. Later, when Tiedan learns that Yuguan has feelings for Ya'er, he wholeheartedly wishes to bring the two together. Xiao Chai mistakenly believes that Tong Shan is the enemy who killed her father and attempts to assassinate him. Tong Shan discovers many inconsistencies in the Huo family bloodbath and persuades Xiao Chai, leading them to join forces to investigate the real murderer. Tong Shan and Liu Yuntian trace leads, becoming suspicious of Gu Qingsan's actions. When Gu Qingsan meets Du Kui in the marketplace, fearing that Du Kui might reveal the robbery incident from years ago, Gu Qingsan kills Du Kui to silence him while pretending to be benevolent to gain favor from Tiedan and others. Gu Renjie discovers many contentious actions of Gu Qingsan while in "Yu Qing Bank." He sees Gu Qingsan using ruthless methods to maneuver among people, willing to sacrifice his own son for personal gain. Once Renjie confirms that Gu Qingsan is the bandit responsible for the separation of the Tong brothers, he agrees to marry into the De family as a means of getting close to Jinyun, waiting for an opportunity for revenge. Du Lihan, introduced by Ye Yutong, meets Gu Renjie. Lihan throws himself into revolutionary work but is arrested by government troops. Tiedan and others join forces to rescue him, allowing Lihan to escape, while Tong Shan is framed by De Yangzhong and imprisoned. With Tong Shan in prison, the Tong family's living conditions become dire. Renjie learns that Yuguan is his long-lost fourth brother and secretly supports him. However, Ya'er mistakenly marries Yuguan during the rescue of Lihan. Although Ya'er has resentment towards Tiedan, she gradually discovers Yuguan's kindness and innocence, eventually accepting him and they become a couple. Gu Qingsan covets Xiao Chai's beauty and wishes to possess her, unexpectedly, De Yangzhong forces Xiao Chai to become his concubine upon seeing her. The conflict between Gu and De intensifies: Before Tong Shan is imprisoned, Xiao Chai already suspects De Yangzhong of being the mastermind behind the Huo family massacre. To confirm her suspicions, Xiao Chai agrees to marry into the De family despite objections, searching for evidence. While in the De residence, her movements are restricted, and she accidentally sees De Yangzhong secretly entering a study. Curious, one day Xiao Chai enters the study and finds a portrait of her deceased mother hanging there, leading her to deep sorrow and confirming that De Yangzhong is indeed her family’s killer. Xiao Chai attempts to assassinate De Yangzhong but fails, and he forcefully feeds her medicine, causing her to lose her memory, and she is locked in a firewood room. Tiedan tries to break into the De residence to rescue Xiao Chai but is stopped by Gu Renjie. Gu Renjie repeatedly creates conflicts and contradictions between De Yangzhong and Gu Qingsan. When Gu Qingsan's identity is exposed and the tide turns against him, he commits suicide with a gun. De Yangzhong suffers a stroke from anger when he learns of his daughter Jinyun’s secret marriage with a servant, realizing that Jinyun and Renjie have never become a couple. One day, a sudden fire breaks out in the De residence, and De Yangzhong watches his family's wealth go up in flames. In the fire, Gu Renjie is severely injured and blinded while saving Jinyun, and Ye Yutong, who was not killed in the church fire, takes refuge in a hospital as a nurse. Yutong reunites with Renjie at the hospital. Although Xiao Chai is reunited with everyone, she does not recognize them. Tiedan takes care of Xiao Chai with great devotion. Du Lihan returns home, and the two brothers, deeply bonded, each give way to Xiao Chai. Tong Shan is also released from prison and reunites with all his sons.
