Growing up in the countryside, Hidetuki Motsukawa (voiced by Tomokazu Sugita) is disheartened by his failure to get into a university in Tokyo and resolutely decides to attend a cram school in Tokyo. On the streets of Tokyo, Hidetuki discovers human-shaped computers, which are incredibly popular in this era. They have beautiful appearances indistinguishable from humans, and even their skin feels soft to the touch. As a poor student, Hidetuki wishes to own one but can only admire them from a distance due to their high price. One night on his way back to his apartment, Hidetuki finds a girl-like human-shaped computer in a trash pile. He carries it home, and by turning on the switch, his life changes forever. The awakened human-shaped computer can only make "ji" sounds, so it is named Jiji (voiced by Rie Tanaka). Under Hidetuki's guidance, Jiji gradually grows like a baby, allowing Hidetuki to discover that Jiji is different from other human-shaped computers. Jiji, with her own consciousness rather than being controlled by a computer program, gradually develops feelings for Hidetuki, but the complicated nature of being a machine and a human makes their relationship hesitant. Besides Hidetuki and Jiji, there are other stories of people and human-shaped computers, some sad and some touching, portraying the truest warmth in an era of high technology.
