The wailing cry echoed through the deep courtyard of the Wu family’s ancestral home, as the elderly patriarch was on the verge of death. Heartbroken, Wu mother suddenly begged her only son, Wu Jiaqi, who was devoted to his father, to strictly follow his father’s last wishes. This was to put an end to the [Moth Throat Syndrome] that had claimed the lives of generations of Wu family’s only sons. It was imperative to resolve this before Wu father passed, for, according to the Taoist, the Wu family’s past grievances had transformed into a fierce big black moth, which targeted the only son of the Wu family to exact vengeance. Once infected with this deadly moth throat syndrome, it was an incurable disease akin to cancer today; not only did the patient face certain death, but it also passed down through generations, leaving no survivors. Therefore, to break this poisonous curse that would lead to the Wu family’s ruin, it was essential to seal off the big black moth within Wu father's body before he took his last breath, preventing it from escaping to survive. This was the only path to save the Wu family. Wu Jiaqi, who had studied in the county and excelled in academics, certainly did not believe such bizarre legends. Despite his desperate attempts to intervene, Wu father finally passed away peacefully. While everyone lamented that Wu Jiaqi could no longer escape the fatal fate of moth throat syndrome, the only one who consistently supported him against the crowd was Liu Rumei. This pearl of the Liu family, betrothed to Wu Jiaqi since childhood, not only had outstanding looks and talent, but also a unique perspective on things. She firmly believed in her parents' conviction that the Wu family was cursed by the big black moth, and disregarding the deep friendship between the two families, she was strongly opposed to breaking off the engagement. Additionally, she and her childhood friend Jiaqi fell in love as they grew up. Therefore, even when Liu father pressured her with his life, it could not stop her from her deep feelings for Wu Jiaqi, and she ultimately fulfilled her promise of marrying into the Wu family. As the wedding sedan brought Liu Rumei, who valued love and loyalty, into the now eerie and dilapidated Wu family mansion, the saddest person was not her parents, who worried that their daughter was sacrificing her happiness, but Dr. Luo Mengfan, who witnessed the couple enter the bridal chamber. In front of others, he offered heartfelt blessings and congratulations, but inside, jealousy boiled over like a volcanic eruption. Dr. Luo Mengfan, having practiced medicine in Wu family village for many years, earned the trust of the locals, including the prestigious Wu and Liu families, who regarded him as a well-respected gentleman. However, the truth was, Dr. Luo was a scheming and terrifying hypocrite. His mother, Feicui, had worked as a maid in Wu family home, dedicated to marrying Wu father to elevate her status. When Feicui became pregnant with Wu father's child, Wu mother not only forced her to have an abortion but also married her off to a brutal butcher. The butcher mistreated Feicui in every possible way, even viewing his own biological son, Luo Mengfan, as an eyesore. Feicui and her son suffered endless abuse until she could no longer endure the torment and eventually died from severe injuries after a brutal beating from her husband. Fortunately, the butcher soon died unexpectedly, leaving Mengfan's life spared. Hence, Mengfan grew up knowing that the unfortunate fate he and his mother suffered was solely caused by Wu father's irresponsibility and Wu mother's cruelty. Therefore, the cunning Luo Mengfan carefully plotted to return to Wu family village. Based on what his mother told him about the hidden worries of moth throat syndrome in previous generations of the Wu family, and with his medical expertise, he determined that the notion of a big black moth possessing someone was utterly absurd. He believed everything stemmed from self-inflicted psychological issues; scaring oneself was the most terrifying thing of all. So, after meticulous planning, he adopted a philosophy of revenge that takes ten years to be fulfilled. Especially after meeting a mystical woman skilled in magic named Huniu, he further exploited her pure affection for him. He manipulated her to use her skills to tap into the Wu family’s already existing paranoid mindset about the big black moth, leading them to fully believe in its existence, ultimately falling into the trap set by Dr. Luo. As a result, after Liu Rumei gave birth to their only child, Xiao Qi, Wu mother, firmly believing in the words of the conniving sorcerer in league with Dr. Luo, sent her only seven-year-old grandson away from home to be an apprentice, with the aim of breaking apart Jiaqi and Rumei as a loving couple, fulfilling Dr. Luo’s long-cherished desire to win Rumei while reaping benefits for himself. Just when Wu mother sent Xiao Qi away forcibly to protect him from being harmed by the big black moth, Jiaqi, who longed to be with his family yet felt helpless to protect his wife and child, finally broke Rumei's heart. Unwilling to make further meaningless sacrifices for the superstitious Wu family, Rumei decided to leave Wu family and live elsewhere with her beloved Xiao Qi. Meanwhile, Huniu, who had been repeatedly manipulated and toyed with by Mengfan, finally awoke to the realization that her feelings for him were nothing more than self-deception because Mengfan had long been consumed by hatred. The only love he had ever had was for Rumei alone. Thus, Huniu deeply regretted using magic to make the Wu family firmly believe in the big black moth’s curse, leading them down the tragic path of ruin and separation. Huniu still harbored deep feelings for Mengfan, not wanting to see him suffer. She repeatedly tried to awaken him, but those who play with fire ultimately get burned. She never imagined that the curses she unleashed could not be recanted by her, the instigator. Though she regretted not heeding her late father's words to stop early, the most shocking revelation to her was that the seemingly elusive big black moth curse actually came true for Wu family’s eldest son. The even more astonishing and unbelievable fact was that the eldest son of the Wu family was not the only son Wu Jiaqi but was actually Luo Mengfan, born of Wu father and Feicui. Unbeknownst to Mengfan, who was solely focused on revenge, he did not know his true identity. The big black moth curse he had incited through Huniu ultimately turned against him.
