This series is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Russo's novel "Straight Man" and tells a midlife crisis story set at Railton College, narrated in the first person by William Henry Devereaux Jr. William serves as the English department chair at a severely underfunded college in Pennsylvania's rust belt, far from the idealized version of the role. In the original work, William Henry Devereaux Jr. is a reluctant participant in everything. His reluctance partly stems from his personality, as he is a born anarchist, and partly from the disarray within his department, which is more divided than the Balkan Peninsula. Over the course of a week, Devereaux will find himself battered by an angry colleague, imagining his wife having an affair with the dean, suspecting a curvy part-time teacher is trying to seduce him with a peach pit, and threatening to execute a goose on local television. Throughout this process, Devereaux will come to terms with his flirtatious father, his abandonment of promises made in youth, and the ominous failures of certain important bodily functions.
