In the 1940s, the shadow of war loomed over the world. In a mountain village in Japan, a middle-aged man, Kurokawa Kyuzo (played by Onishi Nobumitsu), enlisted in the army, but returned as a mutilated man with lost limbs, a burned half face, deaf, and mute. His wife, Shige (played by Terajima Shinobu), couldn't accept this reality and contemplated suicide. However, Kyuzo was celebrated by villagers and even the government as a "living military god." With the persuasion of the villagers and relatives, Shige accepted her almost unrecognizable husband. The incomplete Kyuzo was oblivious to the changing tides at home and abroad; his most basic desires became urgent needs. Despite Shige's unwillingness, she had to fulfill the responsibilities of a wife to the best of her ability. In this process, the fragile vanity of the "military god" and his "military god wife" gradually shattered, and both faced inescapable pain deep within their souls... This film is adapted from the short story of the same name by Edogawa Rampo and won the Best Actress award (Terajima Shinobu) at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival.
