The story is set in the final years of the Victorian era, where London is plagued by "The Touched," a group mostly comprised of women who suddenly exhibit extraordinary abilities, some of which are charming, while others are unsettling. Among them are the mysterious and miserly widow Amalia True and the brilliant young inventor Penance Adair. The two are champions of this newly formed underclass, establishing a home for "The Touched" while fighting against various forces to earn a space for those who have historically been marginalized. This series is Joss Whedon's first standalone project since 2009's "Dollhouse," for which he collaborated with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" writers Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie. Whedon stepped back from the project after overseeing the first half of the first season, with Philippa Goslett appointed as the new showrunner for the latter half, while Whedon retained the titles of creator and executive producer.
