Bruce (James McAvoy) is a Scottish police officer with a beautiful wife and a lovely daughter, leading an enviable happy marriage. A Japanese man is murdered in a tunnel, and the police department takes the case very seriously. At the same time, there is a recent promotion opportunity within the department, and Bruce and his colleagues are eager to seize it. Bruce firmly believes that with his excellent investigative skills and a few tricks, if he can solve this case, he will surely be promoted. During the investigation of the murder case, Bruce also takes on another case—investigating who keeps making harassing phone calls to his friend Bladesey's wife. Throughout the process, Bruce continuously shows the audience how an exceptional police officer utilizes the evil nature of humanity to achieve his goals... The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh, the author of Trainspotting.
