Samuel (Hugh Grant) is overwhelmed upon learning that his girlfriend Rebecca (Julianne Moore), with whom he has lived for five years, is pregnant. Used to a life of freedom, he is not ready for children yet. Moreover, as a child psychiatrist, he has seen too many children and feels little affection for them.
Faced with immense pressure and responsibility, Samuel is in great pain. Despite the examples and encouragement from friends, he cannot shake the gloom in his heart and struggles to accept that he is going to become a father. As his relationship with Rebecca worsens and she checks into the hospital alone, Samuel feels even more helpless.
At this moment, he watches a recording of the ultrasound of his child and is suddenly moved beyond words. Later, with the patient counsel of doctors and friends, he finally comes to terms with the fact that he is going to be a father.
Samuel marries Rebecca, and together they prepare for the arrival of their child. As Rebecca goes into labor, Samuel becomes anxious and excited, turning into a flustered mess, causing chaos in the delivery room…
